Box Tape Goo

Hello,
I carry a SAK Farmer for EDC(pretty much the perfect pocket knife IMHO). Well...
I started opening some boxes yesterday and I got some scotch tape goo on my
knife blade. I dont think its going to hurt the blade, it just looks crappy,
and I like to keep my blades very clean(I often use them for food prep). I
tried washing it off with jsut water, then dish soap and water, but it just
seems to smear. I am looking for a non harsh chemical sollution for cleaning
tape goop off of my knife blade.

Thanks in advance!

My fiance's nail polish remover works awesome, but the acetone IS a little harsh.
Rinses off fine though.

Try WD 40 on a rag, then soap and water. Another thing that works but takes a little patience is rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl, or 2-propanol for the chemists out there). Some stores have 99% IPA, this works too.

I like to keep my blades clean too. I don't like having the adhesive on my blades either.

Everyone's suggestions are good , if I can add one more it is to use caution when cleaning your blade , I have cut the crap outta myself more than once cleaning the blade of whatever knife I was using.
:)

WD40 works well and is usually found in every shop. When not available; varsol, paint thinner, gasoline all work. In a pinch a little alcohol from a bottle of scotch will do.

Acetone (fingernail polish remover) works and evaporates quickly. Clean after removal with Dawn and water. You can get a pint for under $3.00 and that will last you for years...

Oh, oh, me too. I have cut myself so deep I should have had stitches while cleaning one of my blades. I didn't even know I cut myself until the rag I was using started turning red.

Good advice,
Brett

A Tuf-Cloth will remove tape goo and protect the blade from rust at the same time. Every knife owner should have one.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

I use a q-tip to keep fingers away from a blade slathered in slippery stuff.
alcohol
baby oil
wd-40
nail polish remover
high speed 40 grit belt
etc.

An "orange oil" based product called "goo-gone". It's great stuff, will remove gum, glue, "mystery goo", etc. and is harmless to most anything. Will work on wood, metal, etc. Try it, you'll be impressed. Not very expensive either.

With that in mind...I pretty much always wipe it off with my fingers. It may take several swipes and some rubbing but it comes off fine. I'm sensitive to nasty-smelling chemicals so I'll take the odor-free route when possible.

That said, I'll put in another vote for WD-40 when elbow grease won't cut it.

Those "hand sanitzer" gels are mostly alcohol (Purell is 62%). I normall squirt out some on a paper towel, goop it onto the blade, then let it sit on there for a bit before wiping it off. Seems to work well, and the stuff doesn't evaporate quite as fast as liquid alcohol.

Flitz works wonders for me. I use it for all my blade cleaning.

Same here, but not good for knives that come in contact with food...as all metal polishes are not edible...I actually have a cheaper knife I use just for use with cuttign tape, or if you can spare a blade, use the smaller blade on your SAK, that way your large blade will stay nice and clean for food prep!
