Boyer Knives, anyone?

I have one of his mc drop points. The knife of 1095 steel is very servicable. But, truthfully, fit and finish of knife and sheath are just okay, especially compared to some other makers' knives I have in the same price range of around $85-$100.

I ordered the same thing you did about a month ago....i am still waiting for it. you said that the sheath and finish weren't too great. what made them like that? was the blade not sanded fine enough, uneven grinds? what is not soo good about the sheath?
I am only asking this cause i'd like to know what to expect. I am sure it will turn out to be a reliable blade and handle and all.thats about all i care about....how well it holds an edge and such. Did it come sharp?
thanks

Luke,

Again, the knife and sheath is very usable. The 1095 steel held it's edge in pruning brush and such. The coating had some scratches but didn't go through.

THe fit and finish, well... Even with the leveling effect of coating, one can still seem that the blade was not highly polished because there are still little rises and indentations. Looking a the handle from the pommel end, there is clear left to right downward angle instead of a horizontal plane. Where the handle scales meet the blade, the are small but noticable gaps on both sides indicating the lack of adhesive there. These gaps will allow dirt, lint and water in. Good thing the tang is coated. The multi carry sheath is also usable but lacks attention to final finish.

A good comparison is with my REKAT utility neck knife which almost the same as the Boyer, minus the micarta scales. The REKAT was around $45 dollars but the fit and finish of the knife and sheath is noticably better. I guess I expect a little more from a handlemade.

It is good to know what expect, i appreciate you writing me back. physical finish doesn't bother me a whole lot....i just care about edge holding and toughness. However you do bring up a good point, since it is custom it should be finished better.
I am complaining though....i can't wait til i get it cause it seems like a great quality knife.
thanks again

just got my personnal hunter model, and it looks like a very sturdy knife, doesn't feel sharp but it cuts hair off of the forearm. I'm still trying to figuare out how to use the shoulder harness.

I should have my Multi Carry Mini Tanto this weekend. Then I will let you know.

hey guys.
I got my multi carry drop point. Very nice knife. I sanded the g 10 handles a little less square but other than that it is great. THe sheath is great too. I will only use the neck knife funtion and just loop it on my belt and drop it in my pocket....but he has good stuff

I have Mark Boyer's multi-carry drop-point with black micarta scale handle for sale. It's in excellent condition; he made it in February of this year. He charges $85 for it;
I'm selling mine for $65. If you're interested, I can provide more details if you email me. thanks

Ps I just got it and it is in mint shape.

I got my Mini Tanto finally. As sing said, I would expect more from custom maker.

The knife is bigger and heavier than it looks on the picture.

Blade: Not sharp at all, the coating is good, grind lines are not even - both sides of the blade look different especially at the secondary tip. There is BOYER stamped into the blade - the stamp is not straint and some letters are thinner than others.

Scales: Cocobolo wood, quite smooth. But there is a small crack in it (from first pin towards the blade). It was fixed but it is still visible. The scales are of different thickness. There is visible gap between the scales and the tang.

Handle: Quite comfortable

Sheath: Kydex, simple but functional. The knife is secure in it.

I can compare the knife with two Boker Specialists I own and for the same price - the Bokers are better.

Also from the picture on Mark's site I got the impression that the knife is smaller. I would say it is too big for neck carry.

I am not disappointed with the knife but I am not also rally happy. Maybe I was expecting too much...
