Here are some pictures of a project that I recently finished. A customer asked me to clean up a Walter Brend combat axe for him. I believe he purchased the original from BladeArt. When I got it it was pretty rough. It appeared to be water jet or laser cut, and then a bake on finish was applied after it was rough ground.
I trued all the edges, changed the grind from hollow to convex, put a G-10 handle on it and satin finished the exposed blade. I also reground the spike and skull crusher. How do you like the G-10/steel grind on the skull crusher? Sorry the pictures are not very good.

A vast improvement in appearance. Nice work.

A question though - does the added weight of the scales affect the balance and weight distribution, or throwability, for that matter?

Derrick,
The balance was not affected. I feel this is because I used 1/8" material and also because I applied it to the entire length of the handle. The axe felt much better in the hand after the work was done. The handle has no sharp edges now. Before it was straight off of the water jet/laser and had not been debured. It was almost painful to use. My customer could not believe the change.

Tom,

Great work. The skull crusher is awesome and it is good to see a proper convex edge on an axe, even one made for combat.

BTW, it was great to meet you and shoot the **** around the "Pit" Saturday night.

Excellent, Tom!

Hard to tell from the angle, but is the skull crusher beveled as well? (to fit the slab angle)

IOW,could you use the end for piercing? (not just pummeling)

Yes....this is gruesome talk.....

Thanks for all the input and feedback! Daniel the skull crusher was fun to make. I applied the G-10 handles and then ground the bevels. I thought this might give an interesting look. I did not make the skull crusher sharp. I did not think that this would be necessary and might be dangerous. The edges are a little thicker than 1/16" and the point is slightly rounded. This being the case I would still not want to get hit with this. I immagine the pressure/square inche is pretty high. Thanks again.

Tom,

I have a damn good idea...Send that Brend Fighting Hatchet to ME, and tell the guy that you did the work on it for, that it was lost in the mail. It would SURE make a NICE 50th birthday present for me.:D.

That hatchet looks TOTALLY AWESOME!.:).

Very nice!!! I just picked up a Brend from Glockman99 and I was curious to know how much you'd charge to make my new hawk into a "sister" piece to the one pictured above?

Thanks in advance.

knew there was something I wanted to see of yours, Tom......now I remember...:D
