Hello all. I am looking for an axe in the vein of the Barbarian. I want an axe with a large cutting edge sort of like Hamish in Braveheart. If anyone has seen "Reign of Fire" yet you'll see Mathew McConoughy's huge axe in the movie. It is just what I am looking for. I like Gransfors Bruks Broad Axes but they are used chiefly for squaring logs. Another axe I really like is the Danish Axe by Arms and Armour. The Medieval axe by H&B Forge is nice too. Does anyone know of any large Barbarian type axes or Broadheaded Axes that are extremely durable? Please let me know. Thanks a lot.

I have the H & B Medieval. Mine came somewhat dull, but with very sharp points. A little file work and I had it adequately sharp. A good value for the price, as with all of H & B's products.

At shows I've seen some limited production Gransfors axes in Medieval/Viking styles. However, they were several hundred bucks. If you want to drop that kind of coin, you could contact them about availability or a custom order. www.gransfors.com . The result would be about 10 Rockwell C scale points harder than the H & B, shaving sharp, and more nicely finished---as you would expect for many times the price.

Garrett-Wade carries the Westerling brand of Swedish axes. Critics agree that the Granfors-Bruks axes are probably better, but the Westerlings are a pretty good buy. And their Broad Axe may be a bargain at $92 US. Look over some of their other offerings, their Czech axes may also interest you.

There is a company called "Last Legend" that has a product line called Skofnung. They "claim" that these are the toughest axes out there, as far as fantasy/medieval goes. They are about 1/3 of what a Gothem runs. Will Barber of HB Forge does custom work. Draw out what you want, put the dimenions on it and e-mail it to him. He did a Skeggox for me and I love it. Also there are a couple companies in the Czech Republic that make good stuff, and pretty wicked designs to boot.
