Hi guys,

I just broke my new (4 weeks old) RC3 while trying to get some fatwood out of an old stem.
Just a lot of chopping.

And in one moment my whole body weight was applied and the tip snapped off.
I had to take another knife and a multitool to get it out of the wood.

Due to the really hard abusing I dont want to take the RAT guarantee, but I'm going to buy a new one - maybe a black or green one.

I hope you can see the pics.

Sorry to hear you broke your knife. Not sure how much you weigh, but that must have been a good amount of force on a small tip.
The pics did not seem to make it in the post.

Well, guess it's time to regrind the tip and make it an RC-2 1/2! :D

Taken from the RAT website:

No Questions Asked Warranty. If you screw it up, break it, or cut it in two with a cutting torch, send it back and we'll replace it. Warranty is transferable. In other words, we warranty the knife no matter how many times it's been traded, sold or given away. We don't ask for a sales receipt, date of purchase or where you bought the knife - No fine print and no hassles. If you have a problem, contact us.

Note: You MUST contact us before returning the knife. The knife must be sent back to us with a tracking number so we can track and verify the return.

We do not warranty against rust or normal wear and tear. Note: Our knives are made from high carbon 1095 steel. And while 1095 is a top choice for professional cutlery designed for hard use, it will rust and stain if not properly cared for - especially on the cutting edge and around the laser engraving. It is the user's responsibility to keep the blades properly lubricated and cleaned. We suggest using a dry film rust inhibitor such as TUF-GLIDE or TUF-CLOTH.

A lot of folks have asked us how we can stay in business offering such great customer service and warranty protection. The answer is simple; we believe that American consumers, as a whole, are honest people. The occasional customers who are dishonest are few and far between, so even if we lose every once in a while due to dishonesty, our reputation of great customer service, regardless of the situation, brings us more good customers.

@jimidfish: I know that.
But I'm not the person who insist on the guarantee of such a good company like RAT due to the abuse I've done with my RC knife.
Its not my manner.

I would send the knife in anyway. RATs are meant to be abused. They aren't meant to break. That's a pretty significant blade failure. The guys at Rowen may want to take a look at the steel to see what happened.

Yikes! I agree with moonwilson on this one....even if you dont want them to replace it they will be wanting it back and insisting on a replacement for you.

I've checked several post services...and the cheapest was 34 Euro...thats about $47!!!
So it seems its not worth sending it back to the US due to the costs.

from what the steel grain looks like , maybe the RAT people should look into , IMO
anyway , the abuse would have broken even a very good heat treated blade, so.....

I guess if you're not going to send it back, I would say grind a flat on the end, kind of like the Columbia River Razels. Might come in handy for scraping, chiseling, or even digging.

Wow, must have been some hard use on that! Only the fourth time I have heard of a RAT breaking. One was thrown in a dumpster, 2 got a new one via warranty, and you didn't even want the warranty.

Shuya, thanks for sharing that info. , How much do you weight ? Just curious to know what you put it through (more or less). \If you send it back, maybe Rowen could check the metal on the rest of the knife, to make sure its up to spec. I would think their Quality Control or R&D depts. would be interested in testing the remainder of that blade? Just a thougt. Maybe you should think about the RC5 next. I dont think anyone would be able to do that to a RC5.

the rc 3 is a great knife, but it is not meant to have ones whole body weight applied to the flat side of the knife. you need like 1/4 inch stock for that kind of lateral strength. a blade of that size just isnt meant for that. I wouldnt feel right about asking for a replacemeant either knowing that I was using the product outside of its designed parameters. Thats like LL bean, sure you can wear a pair of their boots for years and then send them back and say that you are not happy with them, but its just not cool to take advantage of a great company who actually does back up their stuff.

well......... since your not gonna return it, can i have it? or you could do a give away.
