I bought some of this Birchwood Casey's Plum Brown Barrel finish and want to try it on a carbon steel blade.

Will it hurt the temper to bring the blade to 200 degrees F long enough to coat it with this stuff ( bottle says to bring part to 200 degrees F ) so that is why I ask.

I prefer to use the browning compound made by Dixie, you can use it coldbut it takes a while longer. I used it on a scalper knife I made. Im telling you this in case you dont want to heat.

No it won't hurrt at all. Remember the water out of your kitchen sink is 130+- F. I would recommend you do not do this cold though. The heat opens the pores in the steel. I even heat to use cold blue. A trick to try is to dump it in hot water after the browning process. It helps to seal the color in!
