Lightning in a bottle. That looks terrific. Like new.

An exciting find. There is a story there I betcha. Has it been authenticated?

Did Leroy add the bail?

Actually it was a bay purchase. I sent pictures of it to Joe before he had his surgery. He said it was the real thing. Leroy also. Leroy did add the bail.

Wow! that came out great,i thought the blade would show pitting being carbon steel, but it looks fabulous!Leroy is the man as they say!

A nice piece of Buck history you have. hkingdom could you please give us some history on these? Thanks

This information is from an article by Larry Oden for Blade's Knives & Their Values.

Hoyt Buck made the Model 117 in 1946. Few 117s were made. Actually he made the blades, and put them into handles from war surplus lifeboat knives.

I read that Hoyt made the 117 blades from used files that he bot for $0.01 each in quantity from war surplus in his area.

Is there any visibile or other evidence that the blade was once a file?

Did he use a brass pivot pin on that one?

That looks like a terrific, long and symmetrical and even, nail nick on the blade. I'm guessing that he was a righty because the other side didn't get the nick. It looks machine cut. Maybe he was just playing to the percentages making his first folder for righties since most folk are that.

I don't see any evidence of it being made from a file. but I've looked at a lot of the older fixed blade knives that he made, and I can't see it on all of them either. I have seen it on some though.

It appears to have a brass pivot pin. I agree with you, I think he must have been a rightie.

HK I'm sure glad that a long time collector like you got that one! I'm real happy for you.I bet it was hard to hold your breath all week!!
