I received one from my father yesterday. It's the large version w/ rubber grip and I plan on carrying it today on the belt. It feels heavier than my 110, weight is never an issue with me, but I've never EDCed this large before. Anyone else try it daily? If nothing else it will accompany me outdoors. I hardly like nylon sheaths, but this one, I can tell is sturdy. Thanks for all responses and have a great weekend.

P.S. I will let you know my thoughts as well throughout the week.

I EDC'd that knife for about 4-5 months.. And it did great.. Until the lock failed and nearly chopped my finger off... I had the wooden one and the mini version.. Which all would bail with a light spinewhack.. Check your lock good... If it is. Then get cutting...

Mora, Welcome. Hope you enjoy your Alpha Hunter.Yes it is heavier than the 110 and heavier duty.I don't know what trim was doing w/ his 277 for the lock to fail. But I've used mine considerable and my daughter as well w/o any problems.Use it and enjoy it then let us know.DM

Hello David...
I was working in a tight area.. While I was moving around.. I tapped the spine of the blade against something .. And thus caused the blade to crush onto my finger...

The other two knives... I could defeat the lock by simply wiggling the blade in different directions...

Your welcome!

If you haven't tried it, that sheath should be able to be carried horizontal
as well as vertical. I like horizontal as it is more out of the way.
Have never had one fold up on me. That may be a right tool for the job kind of thing.

I carry and use the Alpha Hunter every day for a couple of years have a couple of the rubber 279 and wood 277s, but use the 279 the most have never had a problem with the inter lock at all. Can't really see how it could fail. Great knives!

I have been using 279 as an EDC for a few months. I use it as a horizontal carry and have had no problems because of the size. I have never had a problem with the lock but have found the Alpha Dorado to be stiff.

I carry my 279 and my 277 horizontal also, and I find my Alpha Dorado very stiff you can't close it with one hand.

When you open the blade and the inter lock moves in place you can not push it over with your thumb to unlock like you can with the alpha hunter.
The inter lock spring is to stiff.

The liner lock seems a bit thick and is hard to move over to unlock the blade. The Alpha Hunters I have are easier to move compared to the Dorado. No problem, as I use the Alpha Hunter as my EDC.

My wife has experienced this problem w/ her Dorado as well.I tried it and found it is stiff.
The length of the locking mechanism could have something to do w/ it.A short piece of metal does'nt flex as easily as a longer piece like that on the 277.Or is it thicker?DM

Also, something I've noticed about the 277 is that is has a built in self cleaning system.
Once you've field dressed a deer w/ a folder you'll notice the blade well traps a lot of meat, creating cleaning problems later.Whereas the open bottom on the 277 allows this to fall on thru and should some get stuck in that area just forced water spray w/ get it out.DM

I find my Dorado liner to be strong, but I can certainly move it with my thumb. It does take a firm grip to hold it there, so I close it with a little bump of the spine against my leg (usually), then move my fingers and push it closed the rest of the way, like a slip-joint. Either that, or just use two hands. I like it that way, it locks up with authority and I appreciate that. I wouldn't change anything.

For the last two days it has been the Buck 279 teamed up with a Leatherman Wave. So far the performance has been top notch. Had no problems with the lockup. Opening is nice and smooth with or without the thumb studs. I have my tension loose enough to where I can pull the knife out of the sheath, hold it by the handle and give the knife a quick flick of the wrist (blade facing down), blade comes out and up, locked and ready for hard use. Even with the tension tight the bushings remain nice and smooth.
I have used the 279 for some fire starting, cutting wallpaper (dropped the utility knife), cutting rope, carving. Edge holding is good so far. Grip is nice, no discomfort at all. I do want to customize some scales; walnut, cherry. I also have some highimpact resistant synthetics that would make great handles.
Thanks again for all the responses. More review to come.
