I have both the Smidgen and the Hartsook as recent aquisitions. Well, I "had" both to be mire accurate.
Scoffed at the idea of that midget wrestler knife for quite a long time. Ever since the Hartsook came out I thought it was a joke...what the hell would I do with it?
(same thing with the 112 at first, but these Buck pushers here on the forum have a way of grinding the weak down LOL)
But then I heard of the Smidgen. The one thing I thought was cool about it was the carbiner key ring it's attached to...doubles as a bottle opener...gotta have it. So, I ordered one since it's about $5-10 cheaper than the Hartsook...AND comes with a bottle opener. It's the little things that make me happy.
Smidgen arrived in the mail and a couple of days later I ordered a Hartsook.
The Hartsook has not left my belt loop since.
I use it for opening packages and light work. It's handy when I don't wanna whip out my 110 that is always with me. I look at it as a 110 edge saver
So, long story short, as a skeptic, I am now a fan.
I'd put up a pic of the Smidgen and the Hartsook...but I gave the Smidgen to my son as a Christmas stocking stuffer. Think I'll get another one. Kept the Hartsook for the better steel (S30V) and the black finish is less obvious hanging from the belt loop.
The Smidgen 160 (420HC Steel) is the same form factor design as the Hartsook 860 (S30V Steel and Black Oxide).
Here's the Hartsook with a 110NS BG-42 G-10 Micarta for scale.
