Hi there...

I had one eye in the little neck knife Buck Hartsook.

Does someone has it ? What do you think ? Is it sturdy enough ?

I mean... The size looks perfect to me, but I think it looks like kinda thin. Not thick enough, maybe.

Can someone point me a good review of it ? Or post some pics, please ?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply...

The latest version is called "Smidgen" ?

I´ll gonna keep searching for more info about it.

Thanks again!

I have both the Smidgen and the Hartsook as recent aquisitions. Well, I "had" both to be mire accurate.

Scoffed at the idea of that midget wrestler knife for quite a long time. Ever since the Hartsook came out I thought it was a joke...what the hell would I do with it?
(same thing with the 112 at first, but these Buck pushers here on the forum have a way of grinding the weak down LOL)

But then I heard of the Smidgen. The one thing I thought was cool about it was the carbiner key ring it's attached to...doubles as a bottle opener...gotta have it. So, I ordered one since it's about $5-10 cheaper than the Hartsook...AND comes with a bottle opener. It's the little things that make me happy.

Smidgen arrived in the mail and a couple of days later I ordered a Hartsook.
The Hartsook has not left my belt loop since.

I use it for opening packages and light work. It's handy when I don't wanna whip out my 110 that is always with me. I look at it as a 110 edge saver ;)

So, long story short, as a skeptic, I am now a fan.

I'd put up a pic of the Smidgen and the Hartsook...but I gave the Smidgen to my son as a Christmas stocking stuffer. Think I'll get another one. Kept the Hartsook for the better steel (S30V) and the black finish is less obvious hanging from the belt loop.

The Smidgen 160 (420HC Steel) is the same form factor design as the Hartsook 860 (S30V Steel and Black Oxide).

Here's the Hartsook with a 110NS BG-42 G-10 Micarta for scale.

The Smidgen is the same size as the Hartsook but is 420HC not S30V. It is also not coated.

I love my Smidgen and carry/use it daily. While it is thin it will handle light/medium cutting chores easily. It takes a shaving sharp edge easily and holds it quite well. The sheath is nice and secure and has held up well with me "playing " with it.At $15 it is hardly a risk to buy and try one, even in todays economy. It truely is my most used knife.

I usually carry it on my keys but it is the only necker I will carry as a necker. It is light enough not to bother me,but I replaced the paracord Buck sends with it with a ball-chain.

Thanks for the tips, Goose and Todd!

It looks like a nice little knife. Sweet!

In terms of design and size, Hartsook and Smidgen is exactly the same ?

In pictures, the Smidgen looks more "edgie"... Maybe it is because it´s satin finish.

I intend to pick a Hartsook, just because the S30V coated steel.

Can you guys tell me Hartsook thickness, exactly, in milimeters ? Does it give a solid feel in hand (not bending over...) ?

Thanks for the reply!

Here is a comparison pic. These are rough specs
.05 oz w/o sheath
13 Grams w/o sheath
1/16" thick
Blade 1 3/4"
overall 4 1/8
Tip down pressing there is very little flex IMO
Plus they are fun to play with:thumbup:

At the choil the blade is 1/16" and at the hilt the handle is the same.

1/16" = 0.0625" = 1.5875mm

Yes, EXACTLY the same...IIRC the blad grind was the same as well.

Neither felt like it will bend before it snaps...I was curious too and used a small pair of Vise-Grips to check it out...great heat treating = no bending.

LOL, it was a photo finish with our posts Longbow. A minute apart. You covered all the dimensions though...I was lazy. And a comparison pic to boot :)
Yeah, disclaimer in case LG tries to sue my ass...then I'll have less of nothing to put in my Buck Mayo Waimea money clip ;)

AND, a solid point you made that I missed...it is a fun gadget to play with :thumbup:

Happy New Year Buck Brother...

:D

Never!
Here in Brasil we never stab a "knife-addicted friend" in his back! :p

Thank you guys for the pics and tips. I´ll get one Hartsook as soon as possible. The bend test made my decision!

Cheers

The sheathes are the same except for the color and the Smidge has the ring/bottle opener on it?

I heard that the early Hartsook sheathes had an issue. I hope the one I ordered has the new sheath. Does anyone know if you can order the new sheath or the Smidge sheath from Buck?

Messersmith,
Good to know, thanks! I ordered it from them so hope it came with the new sheath.

I'm sure I'll be calling them when I get back about something so no big deal if it didn't come with the new one. Think I need to order the factory tour DVD.

May need a Smidg so I can do my own side by side testing, yeah, that's why I need it :D

Yep...that's what I did in a way. Ordered the Smidgen. Impressed. HAD to get the Hartsook after that.

Messy is correctomundo (AND he needs to get one too). But, FWIW, I had no probs with the sheaths OC.

Doubt you'll be disappointed. But ya never know. Report back when ya can.

Agent Goose.
Over and Out...

I had the Mayo/Kaala 151 - neat, but big, neck knife. I gave it to a plumber-friend who is headed to the sandbox for a year of contact work. It's sheath looks similar to the Hartsook's - I wondered about it's longevity under use.

I may have to get another one... it was a neat knife. The Hartsook just looks teeny in comparison. Of course, I thought my late Dad's old WWII So. Pacific KaBar was a great camping/hiking knife - until I found that 'little' 110 folder... I guess it's all in your perspective...

My Hartsook arrived yesterday. It's a cool little knife. I'm not into neck knives but I'm going with Goosers idea of clipping it to a belt loop. Seems like a handy and practical way to carry it. Here is a pic of the Hartsook with an 880 and folding Kalinga which also arrived yesterday (it was a good day :) )!

You forgot that "if you experience an erection lasting more than 4 hours, do not use this knife but contact doctor immediately
