Buck Stockman. What are 3 blades for?

OK. Always loved the Buck Stockman but I always wondered what the three different blades were designed to be for.

What is the intended (or popular) use of each of the three blades (Clip, Spey, Sheepsfoot)?

Same sort of goes for the Trapper and other multi-blade slipjoints.

I have always been a SAK guy and with two blades it it simple. The smaller blade is kept razor sharp and is used for delicate tasks where I need a smooth sharp edge...hangnail, splinter removal, stuff like that. The larger is kept sharp but I cut open a box if I haven't a box cutter, whittle etc. I assume same is true for the Stockman but what is each blade really for? By design?

Cutting. :p

The Spey blade is meant for spaying farm animals. Basically it's a scalpel.

The Sheepsfoot is for cutting things on a flat surface.

The Clip point is your standard cutting design.

This is what they were originally meant for they can be used for just about anything.

I keep the spey blade very sharp with a thin edge.
I keep a sheepsfoot obtuse for more abusive cutting.

I use the clip blade for all the big utility cutting jobs that come up; the sheepfoot is for carving & whittling, and the spay I keep razor sharp for food use & prep. (The spay makes a great steak knife.)

thx - cpr

Well I figured as much, in general. I had a Sodbuster as a kid so I never dealt with the three blade thing. I wanted one as a kid but when I was a kid, well guess what, you didn't always get what you wanted and you were OK with it...my dad bought me the Sodbuster so I had nothing to complain about...I still have the Sodbuster and it was my EDC until I went to the SAK.

Looks like I'll be getting a Stockman.

My Grandfather carried a Stockman. It was the knife that I honed my sharpening skills on as a wee lad.It remains one of my favorite slipjoint patterns.I still have that knife,it is a Boker, made from high carbon steel. My Dad bought it for him in the 60s.

While the Stockman Gurus are present, why do the Euro Stockman, like the top two below, a Boker Tree Brand and a Puma, have reversed secondary blades in comparison to the Buck 301, bottom, below??

What sinister meaning is hidden here? Curious minds want to know! And... just where are the Stockman Police when we need them to keep some semblance of order??

Okay, I just wanted to point out - for the uninformed - that not all Stockman have the blades in the same place. Hmmm, maybe it's a LH/RH thing...

Actually, all the stockman patterns I've seen have the sheepsfoot up front with the clip and the spey at the butt by itself, except for Buck. It's not the Europeans that are different.

Prior to 1991 Buck stockman patterns had the same blade layout as most other stockmans, with two backsprings, with the Spey and Sheepsfoot sharing a backspring.

In 1991, Buck switched to a 3 backspring design, with each blade having it's own, and the blade layout was rearranged to the current one.

I've only seen one other, and it's this imported "NRA Outdoors" stockman that was contracted through Benchmade and now discontinued.

The Buck having three springs (three thick)makes it bulkier in the pocket.

Bear in mind that the CASE Medium Stockman 63032 in Chestnut Bone and cv actually has a different blade config. It drops the spey blade in favour of a pen blade. Much more useful in my view, a great small prodder or nail cleaner....
