I am thinking of adding a Buck Strider 880 spear point or one of the Greco folders to my collection/EDC rotation. Can you guys give me some input on this? I haven't been able to look at or handle either one in my area so I need to rely on your help even more. These knives will see hard duty use on the street.

Thanks,

KS

It will be for on duty and some off duty (Municipal LEO currently in special investigations) I have quite an array of edc's but I was wanting a heavy duty folder to compliment the others I have. I do carry fixed blades from time to time. My toughest folder right now is probably a BM710hs. Strider is out of my price range so I narrowed it down to these two based on what I have read here.

I have a Greco Flat Ground Falcon Folder. I don't have a Buck Strider so I can't make a comparison.

I have a hard time imagining a folder which is more solid than the Greco. It is the epitome of a "hard use" folder. However, John Greco said (when I bought it from him at a show in Novi Michigan) that he was more concerned with making a folder that wouldn't break than one which was easy to open or close. It isn't really a one-hand opener or closer.

The Greco Folder doesn't have the sophisticated design or the flawless fit and finish you find in many of the top-rated production folders. It doesn't have a belt clip but comes with a nylon belt sheath.

One interesting feature is that John expects you to disassemble his folder and even supplies a kit that includes spares of all the washers, screws, etc. even the allen wrench to take it apart.

Hope this helps!

The Greco is undoubtedly the strongest folder you can get for the money and is arguably stronger than Strider folders. Not the best fit and finish on them though, if you care about that.

What is this steel that is used in Greco folders?

I've not heard of it.... is it stainless? If not, is the blade coated?.

I have a Greco Companion in A2....not unfamiliar with his work, just not familiar with that steel.

++++++

8670 is definitely not stainless. Supposedly, it's slightly easier to machine than A-2. I have a Greco in A-2 and a few in 8670 and I can't honestly tell much of a performance difference. Either one is tough and stays sharp. :)

Interesting.....

What are the dimensions of the blade....thickness? Does anyone have photos of the lock, liners etc. Also a photo in the hand would be great.

Mr. Greco does have a website with a little information and a few pictures.....www.grecoknives.com

I own only 2 fixed blades, but they are hard use knives without a doubt. Not fancy, just good knives at a very fair price. He sometimes has specials, like buy 2, get 1 for free.

Not on the payroll, just as information.

I have had both the Buck and a Greco and the bottom line is this...After buying my first Greco (flat ground Falcon), I was so impressed I got two more. There is no pocket clip, but I got used to carrying it in a sheath or my back pocket so that didn't matter. As long as you keep the blade wiped down, the Greco should last a lifetime. If you want to add to the looks of the Greco, get the optinal micarta handle kit.

If you should call Jonh Greco to order a knife, you will find out he is a super nice guy. Easy to talk to and hard to get off the phone with.

By the way, the Greco IS kinda hard to open until it breaks in, unless you get the scales kit along with it. Just two thin pieces of flat micarta--definitely not fancy--but, it makes the handle thicker, and it really does become a one handed knife then.
