To whom it may concern.....
Since I first discovered a small fold out Buck Knife product catalog in a little sporting goods store in Tifton Georgia 25 years ago that contained a picture of several knives from the Buck Custom Shop, specifically the Sub Hilt Bowie model 904, I have searched in vain to find one. With the advent of the internet and google etc... I have been able to find.....little more than I was able to find by making phone calls to sporting goods stores and 2 unsuccessful attempts at gleaning info from Buck. I have seen some ridiculously expensive customized versions from gentlemen like David Yellowhorse and such, but those knives are out of my reach and not really what I'm looking for anyway. From the picture in the pamphlet, that I still have, it appears that the knife was available in a rather basic version that appeared to have a bone or antler handle and otherwise appeared from the small image to have a plain, non-damascus, blade.
So, my question is, how do I find one of these knives? Do they still produce them? Are even the plain versions $5000k? I've been collecting buck knives sporadically for 35 years as both my Father and Grandfather would buy me a pocket knife for my birthday or Christmas nearly every year, in fact that's still the tradition in my family, the men exchange knives for birthdays or Christmas, usually buck, or kershaw or the like. I have a Buck Kalinga that has been on my side for every deer season in Ohio, West Virginia, Georgia and Alabama since 1984 and I'd really love to add a sub-hilt bowie to my kit and the model 904 has haunted my dreams since the late 80's.
I realize I'm shooting in the dark and the knife is probably unobtainum, but I'm really interested in learning all I can about that knife, so if you've got some good intel, even if it's more in the line of the origin and history of the Buck 904, I'd greatly appreciate it.
