In a thread 10-3-2003 Joe Houser states.

The 422 with one dot does not have anything at all to do the with 112/110 dots sequence. Right now I am still researching but I believe the one dot on your 422 refers to the change from a conventionally blanked part to a fineblanked part in about 1985. I'm still a little unclear on this one though so don't quote me.

My Bucklite 422 companion of almost 25 years has a single dot inside the > 1987 date code. Would someone please explain to me what "fineblanked" and "conventionally blanked" means.

OK...more old quotes from Joe Houser... 2-6-2001.

The note says that stamps showing one or more dots are for fineblanked parts only. It also mentioned that the dots were removed in 11/85, obviosly because we then switched to the present date codes.

My knife has a >1987 date code with the dot inside. Does my dot mean something other than "fineblanking" if that marking for fineblanking discontinued in 1985 before date codes?

DeSoto, Welcome . Your stamp does 'not' expess Buck's switch to fine blanking as that was prior to your knife's mfg. date. Yet, I haven't found what your stamp depicts. I think we discussed this before some time ago and nothing definative surfaced. However, I would not lose sleep over this one as I don't think we'll figure it out. DM

I continue to maintain that there is a "Dot Phantom" at Buck.

An employee with a good sense of humor who tosses in an irrelevant dot now and then to bedevil (or perhaps fascinate) the poor collector.

;)

(He's reading this and laughing now.)
