Does anyone have forge plans that they would be willing to share. I have an old Coke forge (sp?) and i really am getting sick of crankeing the handle and i would like to build a gas forge.

I built a vertical and Kalindras built a horrizontal a while back, Kal started the thread "Forge pic- in progess - at last" here on Bladeforum, in it I showed several pics of mine and how I built it and Kal did the same with his. I really like this vertical forge I built, it heats up quickly, the heat is very controlable and its not hard on propane.
Do a search on Kalindras and scroll down until you find it.

If you have any questions about my forge just e-mail, I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Good Luck

Bill

I've been convenced that a blown propane forge is much more efficient than a naturally asperated (Ron Reed) type.
I was at a knife makers shop in Georga (can't remember who right now) and he had welded a twisted piece of steel between where the gas was introduced (a 1/4" pipe) and the mouth of the burner. That would have the effect of introducing a twisting of the exaust gas. The claim was that the burn was more efficient and more even heating.
That's the way I'm going to build my next forge.
Still learning (but not spelling), Lynn

If you want to send me an email I will send you a set of pic me making a couple of forges. I will be able to rough up some plans.
The gas burner is th only critical part. The diamiter and length of the forge can be varied a fair bit . It will effect the efficency,
you will burn more gase on a larger diameter but you will be able to
make bigger objects.

My email reg_ellery@optusnet.com.au

be very carfull if you have not used gas before. If you mess up the lighting you can get a sudden flash of gas go off in your face.
If you realy get it wrong you can get an explsion.

If your system leaks the gas can pool in pockets on the floor.
If you make one, check all the joints and use the correct pipe even if it costs a couple of dollars more. I am normally a cheap Ba%$&^d but not with safety.

Howdy!!

I've been working with my forge for a month or two, now, and it seems to work just fine for me!!

If you search up that thread, you can see all of the pics that Bill and I posted, which will give you good idea to start from. My page for the Hellmouth (my forge) is also out here . I found that a LOT of it is personal taste, and what you have lying about or can get cheap at Home Depot/Lowes/your local scrap pile. About the only places where it gets critical are around the burner and the fittings. Most of the propane fittings are standardised, anyway, and depending on whether you build your own burner or buy one will guide you on fittings to the forge for it. I bought my burner from Rex Price, and haven't regretted a second of it!! Other guys 'round here have built there own, and they seem to work just as well for them.

If you have questions or need any guidance, I'm by no means an encyclopedia of gas-forge knowledge, but if you want to email me, I'll be glad to help as much as I can in preventing you from having to re-invent the wheel...(I think a little of this is inherent to the gig, though...like a Jedi having to build his own lightsabre, at some point).

Good Luck!

Kal
