Just finishing up a finishing grinder.
It has a 14 inch wheel, 1 inch shaft running the wheel for stability, 2 inline bearings that are self alinging, and reduction pullys to make the torque right at low speeds!
The motor is only a 1 hp AC with ac vary drive I picked up from a fellow that builds them for me. Geex I figured out what I have in my other one (factory build)
1600 for the grinder and 280 for the wheel.
This will one will be a better grinder cheaper to boot!

What do you use?

that sounds great ralph, my first 2x72 was a coote with a 8". last fall i added a hardcore set up for flat and convex grinding. i dont like the hollow grinds you get from 8" and 10" wheels and have been concidering ordering a 14" for a while. that would make a strong radius. who did you get the 14" wheel from? the folks at tru-grit only go to 12". is it true that you can only run at slower speeds with the 14"?

The wheels can be had at Koval Knives Special order about a month wait.
You can specifie the bore size.

Yes with a 14 you run almost twice the sfpm
as an 8 in wheel. I use reduction of 3 to one to get fast motor speed at slower speeds.
This works great for me!
The ac spindle control is a relience
The electrician sets them up with forward reverse and a speed pot.
I have been running one on a small mill for 6 years now. They run great.
1 hp motors area dime a dozen anymore!

I have some plates a fellow gave me cj.
They are .75 thick 1045 blanchard ground plates OH YA.
I built it on this plate for make it as stable as posible.
The big bearings make a difference when it comes to how smooth it runs. User p ground shafting for the drive!

Darrell, were did you get the 14" wheel?

My grinder runs on 1-1/4" bearings with the wheel end turned down to 1". It runs real smooth, I don't have variable speed though.

Yes the bearings ect
I like direct drive from a shaft. The bearing ID is 1 inch so it heavy duty!

Koval can get them from bader that will fit your machine!
