I bought a Canon s100 digi-cam today, took a few snapshots, and updated my webpage so I thought I'd share some pics with you...

First, here's a Buster Warenski "Carson Caper" knife I recently purchased... it looks a lot like the one our friend Paracelsus has.

This knife is an older example of Buster's work and was purchased from the son of its original owner in Salt Lake City. I was told it was made in the early/mid seventies, and the tang stamp, which reads "B. WARENSKI/ RICHFIELD. UT." is one of his earlier stamps.

The hollow ground, mirror finished blade is made of 3/16" stainless steel (440-C perhaps - I'm not sure) and measures 4" from guard to tip. The handle, made of cocobolo wood, measures 4 3/16". The overall length of the knife is 8 7/16", with a balance point directly between the front fingers. Embellishments include a 1/4 x 5/8 x 1 1/2" stainless steel guard, an escutcheon plate, and black (micarta?) and stainless steel spacers. The handle also has a diamond checked section towards the back for imcreased purchase. The knife is housed in a handmade leather sheath stamped "BUSTER'S KNIVES/RICHFIELD, UTAH" on the back.

Can anyone tell me what type of steel this might be? What did Buster use back then? Is the knife as old as I was told?

Here's a Herb Derr fighter I've recently added to my collection.

And here's a Stek fighterI bought last fall (I wore this as part of my Halloween costume

More pics and info of each on my website. I've got 7 more customs on order, so I'll be sure to post you on updates to the site when they come in.

Enjoy....

E-mail the picture to Buster and ask him directly. jewelw@hubwest.com

It is actually Julie's email address; she checks more often. They are both very friendly and I am sure he will be glad to ID it for you.

P.S. About one week before the Warenski web site is up. Damn I love this job!

You have Great taste Wulf!

Congratulations on finding a great knife for an Outstanding price. Enjoy. That style of skinner is one of Buster's signature styles, easily recognized as a Warenski.

One or both of us Should email Buster and get the facts about dating his marks. My knife is 1/4 inch stock, and just is just a little bigger. I am guessing the steel is 440C. No estuchean plate or checkering on mine.

Your handle looks like it might be a bit dry and could use a little linseed oil treatment. Boiled linseed mixed 1:1 with mineral spirits and simply wiped on with a rag will re-hydrate the wood. Keep it wet for about an hour to allow the wood to absorb the oil, wipe it down, and repeat the process in 24 hours. Let it dry for several days and then seal with ren wax or even JJ floor wax. This will not change the wood at all, but will get rid of the white streaks I can see in the photo which look to me to be a sign of dry wood.

I love your other knives too!

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Niel - the knife you're making will be put to some rigorous use, so I'll be sure to take pics the minute I get it, because after that it's gonna get ugly quick!

It's first mission (provided it's gets here soon) will be at the side of a good friend of mine who's taking it on a winter camping/ backcountry skiing adventure in Wyoming in Feb. It's second big test will be at my side when I go spear-fishing on Middle Caicos this summer.

Para - thanks for the tip! That wood does look a bit thirsty. Let me know if you e-mail the Warenskis - I'd love to find out more!

Woofie here I have been thinking that your just a backwoods kid from that tree infested state you reside in and then you show some fantastic knives from your collection. I am dumbfounded LOL. Seriously those are some very sweet knives you have there. You keep this up think by the time your my age what your collection will look like.
