Butterfly knife ban?

I owned a butterfly knife about eight years ago when I lived in Arizona, I was considering purchasing one now, but I am concerned about the laws that ban people from carrying them. I was wondering why they have such strict laws on butterfly knives, when I personally can open a liner lock much faster?(and I have a lot of experience flipping open butterfly knives)

There is no logic behind knife bans. Banning a knife based on its opening or locking mechanism is, as you've discovered, ridiculous. Lawmakers pass bans based on what they see in television and the movies; films like The Blackboard Jungle went a long way towards getting the federal switchblade law(s) enacted.

Butterfly knives look flashy and dangerous when opened, hence your average ignoramus politician decides they're bad and of no legitimate use to anyone.

A communist college friend of mine once said, "why not ban all explicitly 'combat' knives?" He didn't understand that banning a knife based on its appearance or name was ridiculous.

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

The government is good at banning things that have very little effect on crime. If gang members in L.A. carried a tube of toothpaste when they did a drive-by the government would ban toothpaste!

I think the government should ban people that kill other people, that would be a more effective way of taking care of the problem.

IIRC, in FL you can carry one if you have a CCW. Not sure if you don't.

Knife ban laws make no sense at all, they are a product of fear and lawmakers who don't understand crime, what causes it, or what could prevent it.

This is a repeat of the AW ban. Certain guns are banned because they have bayonnet lugs (causeyou know, the gang members go around bayonnetting each other all the time) or flash hiders (makes the bullet more deadly, dont'cha know) or have a "military appearance" (cause they can scare someone half to death).

Back when kung-fu movies with all the exotic edged weapons were popular and kids were running around with throwing stars, nunchucks etc certain powers to be thought they (butterfly knives) were very dangerous and voiced that opinion into enacting more stupid laws. I believe the laws are state to state unlike the infamous 1958 act.

Knife laws suck. Only in certain local laws does it even state the phrase "butterfly knife" which is also a chinese weapon (aka butterfly swords) I don't think that there is any law that says the word "balisong" (butterfly knife roughly translated from Filipino). The balisong is not even close to a gravity knife since you can't open it with gravity, all that happens is one handle will swing down and the blade will appear slightly but not enough to actually use it for cutting or chopping. Some laws name it a knife that opens using "centrifugal force" illegal and therefore they think that using that phrase encompasses the balisong. Bunch of crap that's what it is.

Actually 'balisong' isn't the Filipino translation of butterfly knife, rather it is the Filipino word for a butterfly knife. I think it is said to originate from the words for 'breaking horns' or something like that. Just thought I'd throw in a bit of useless trivia before this thread got too useful.

They are "banned" throughout Canada. Why? Because all right thinking people know that most crime and evil in the world is attributable to certain knife designs, like the balisong and the switchblade, which in turn lead to the irresistable urge to own guns which in turn leads to the unrestrained use of drugs, unprotected sex, communism, flatulence and Global Warming.
No, there is absolutely no reason for it that makes any more sense than what I just said. It just seems scary and seems an easy target to the bozos who make the laws.

I think the Balisong is just a victim of the overall ban on carrying (in public) Martial Arts weapons in general.

That, and they're fun....... and you know how the government feels about that.

You have to love Ohio laws. They state you can carry any knife for self defense as long as its not a switchblade or a gravity knife.

Of course they can't be concealed if they are 5" or larger.
