I am interested in opinions from anybody who has gotten any of the byrd line from spyderco.......I am especially interested in the Raven as I think that will be my first purchase if I get something from this line. I have a pile of Spydercos and love every one of them.....how do the byrds compare? Thanks in advance everybody.

I recieved a Cara Cara as a gift from a good friend and all I could say when I first opened it up and handled it was WOW! Made in China true, but its as well built as any of the other Spydercos in my collection. I've actually moved it into my line up of carry knives and it sees occasional use. I took some of the material used for swimming pool steps, you know the gritty textured stuff with the back side made to have the wax paper peel off so you can tack it down? I cut that to size and shape and stuck it on the handle for grip. It worked great.

Don't hesitate to buy one of the Byrd knives. They have to be one of the best deals going on the market. Great beater uppers and users. From what I can tell in the short time I've owned this one the steel is superior or at the very least equal to AUS8A. It keeps a good edge. It may be China made but its one of the best knives I've ever seen from China.

Agreed - I have a Meadowlark. They are about $40 CDN up here. They are a great "beater" type knife. I'm also looking at either a Crow or Raven in PE when they show up here. Quality is exceptional for the money. I found that the SS was a bit heavy and so it won't replace my Ka-Bar/Dozier during the week:) The Crow or Raven, however, with the Aluminum handles........:D

I have the Raven, as well as some of the other byrds. Here is a review I did of the Raven:

There’s also some in-hand pics there as well.

I just tried to compare the liner lock of my Raven to the liner lock of a couple others I own. It’s hard to tell but they look about the same thickness. The Raven’s could be thinner, but again, it’s hard to tell.

Here’s a very good report to read if your thinking about getting a Raven. This guy is a professional fisherman, and used his at sea. Pretty impressive IMHO.

Personally I like the knife. It has excellent ergonomics, and the aluminum handles give it a nice, light weight. The “feathered” handle looks cool also.

It also depends on intended use. If you like the blade geometry of the Raven then it should be a good choice. For the price they are ($25 INCONUS shipped), they are hard to beat.

Thanks guys, those comments are what I was hoping to hear. Any favorite places to purchase these critters? New Graham seems to have the full selection at reasonable prices.

They are very solid for their price, in fact would be more than reasonable if they were significantly more expensive.

I usually go through NKG. Thier prices are reasonable and they have excellent CS.

I have 4 Byrds. They are excellent knives. Amazing for the price or even double the price. F&F is first class.

I have used the raven on the lobster boat I work on since I got it a couple of weeks ago. it has experienced LIMITED corrosion, it has excellent edge retention for a 20 dollar knife, it has minimal blade play, locks up tight, and offers a very secure grip with wet hands. It isn't as heavy as the ss models are (I just sold a caracara because it was a little slippery for my hands), and after fishing with this knife it still opens smoothly and locks up tight. you can't go wrong with the byrd line.

Hello,

I've got 26 Byrds (all that have been released thus far). I think they are very great knives for the money charged.

The Raven is a great blade. I prefer the Crow as its slightly smaller size makes it a good pocket carry. I also very much like the Robin for the same reason.

The blade steel and heat treatment give very good (not supersteel, but very good) edge retention. Resharpening (with a Sharpmaker) is a piece of cake.

I'm looking forward to the FRN versions to cut the pocket weight down. I really am looking forward to an FRN version of the Crossbill. I love hawkblills and think the lighter weight will be appreciated by all.

Go buy some Byrds - you love them.

Best - Joe
