Man I'm lucky. As a member of the Ga Knifemakers Guild, I get to rub elbows with some truly great craftsmen. One of these is Carl Rechsteiner of C Rex Custom Knives. Carl is a true master and is one of the many makers in the guild who outskill me by a mile. He's always been really welcoming, and helpful to me, and puts up with my ribbing really well too. Who decided to vote a coonass like me into the guild anyway?

I came home from the January Guild meeting with this little Bowie, and wanted to show it to y'all. Its a beauty. Forged from an old Husgavarna blade, and still shows just a bit of the markings from the blade. I just loved all the details in this piece. The hammered brass guard, and formed copper buttcap. Then the wood is so damn fiery its a sin. Carl and I always discuss wood at the meetings, and I enjoy that a lot. He's into American hardwoods, and I happen to collect these as well. He has actually used some of my Red Oak on his pieces. He carves his wood a bit as well, which I think is a nice touch. Might have to learn that.

The sheath is a work of art also, and features grass carvings to match the blade. Its light too, and I'm going to have to appropriate this frogged bladeslip design. Its just so light. I'm in awe of the sheath every time I look at this knife.

Go check out his site. He's a really great maker and a fine human too!

I met some guys from Georgia at the Brut de Forge class Joe Keeslar taught at Haywood CC this past week/weekend. Throughout the 3 day course they kept talking about Carl's knives. Now I know why. Congrats on a sweet knife Andy.

Geez Andy! Randy told me you had posted about the Tallgrass Fighter. Didn't know you'd have me digging in the dirt with the toe of my boot and ducking my head......shucks.

Thank you for the kind words. As far as the Guild goes, it's probably the single most beneficial thing a Georgia knifemaker can get involved with. Not going to find a finer group of talented and sharing people with whom to associate.

Notes for the inquiring mind:
Blade is forged from a commercial grade Husky mower blade which I have done some very extensive testing to insure it blade worthy. Husky will not give out spec sheet (as of yet), but forges, HT's and performs best when treated as the Cru V steel (1084 on steroids). The handle is curly hickory, one of my favorites. Not to show Andy up but the buttcap is also hammered brass, however it is naval brass (more copper) and responded slightly different to the patina process than the guard.
This was one of those knives that just got better the further along construction went.

The sheath.....well what can be said....I have a very good mentor that pushes me all the time.....Master Sandy Morissey or Dad as we boys call him.

I am honored that you chose it Andy. I could tell you liked it when you first picked it up.
Selling a knife to a fellow knifemaker says it all, thank you again.

Great Knife made by a Great Man!

See you and Carl soon so both of you get in shop!!

Come on Brian, you don't have to butter me up. I'll still bring folks by your table to meet you and see your knives.
If you mean you are coming down to Trackrock, that'd be an even greater treat. I've got to get a hammer in you hand.......all that O1 dust on your floor.....gotta be a sin somewhere.....just wrong I tell ya!!

Not given up on you or Andy - there is life after grinding.

Can't make TrackRock. Stressing now about being ready for Blade as it is :)

Yeah - your for sure the more material effiecient maker :)

Good to see you stopped by Carl. I really love that knife. You'll get me hammering one day when I can relax a bit. Keep working on me. I can't make trackrock this year though. I'll be in Mississippi on the old family place. Loving life. Ahhh.
