Okay, so yesterday I bought a spyderco endura (i love it) to be my EDC. Now I asked the guy behind the counter at Plaza Cutlery in Costa Mesa about the knife laws to make sure (I thought I already looked up on this) that I was in my legal right to carry a folder of any size. He tells me that I can only OPEN CARRY a folder but I can't carry it concealed. This got me nervous because I felt my purchase wasn't as good as it could have been. But it also contridicted with what I looked up online. So I recheck to make sure I wasn't wrong and sure enough it seems that I can conceal any folder in public and on public universities and colleges as well (but not k-12 schools not that i'm planning on going to one soon). Can someone absolutely confirm that either I'm wrong and he's right, or I'm right and he's a little behind the times or just plain mistaken. We're talking California knife law if you haven't figured it out yet.

You can conceal a folder in California. The state of CA itself has no length limit on folding knives. A fixed blade cannot be concealed.

If your county/city has any additional restrictions, I wouldn't know about that.

If not, then you're right and the clerk is wrong. That's not a rare thing though. You would expect them to know, but they might not.

Personally, if I owned/ran/worked in a knife store, I'd have flyers printed up that explained in detail all the laws regarding knives in the state, as well as for the town and surrounding towns if applicable.

AFAIK, no concealed carry of fixed blades with 2.5" or greater length on (public) college campuses and K-12 schools (likely there's additional restrictions). Many say NO knives whatsoever at the K-12 level.

Sacramento and Yolo County have a 3 inch blade limit on ALL knives, including folders. I think any size blade is "legal" according to state law so long as it's stored folded.

Thanks guys, I was just worried slightly because I had seen the law, come to the same conclusion you guys had, but the guy seemed to be the owner's son in a high volume knife/weapons shop so I just wanted to check. Especially since he made sure to leave the clip of his knife visible in the pocket of his pants. Cause hey... getting in trouble with the law usually isn't very fun. ;)
