Hi guys, I was wondering who might know the history of the Cabelas 110 AG S30V. When was it introduced? Did Buck ever stamp them? Has the coating gotten better or worse? I very gently scraped off a few logos, as I think they take away from the knife, but the most recent attempt left me with a small chip.
Does anyone EDC theirs? How has the coating held up around the pivot? I love the edge retention. I stripped a few 14 G wires to put some outlets in my garage and it was still quite sharp.

Thanks Guys

History of the AG series.....???? Good question, I have no idea other than my own history with the knife.

I saw the knife in the Cabelas catalog just before the Deer season of 2005. I was putting in an order for some stuff for the up coming hunting trip and had them also send me an AG 110 with the order. It was love at first sight, the nice rosewood handle, gloss black blade coating, and the yellow ram (it fits my ram 4x4 truck). You have already read my more than happy time skinning deer with that knife. It has been my main sheath carry knife to this day, I carry it over the CS KOA BG-42 110 I had made.

The blade pivot has a few scratchs about the same as any 110 in the pivot area. There are only 2 more small hair line scratchs in other spots on the knife. There are at least two different variations in the coating....gloss black & gun metal gray (don't ask me why). I love this knife and have 5 AG's in my pile.

Some say that paint thinner works real good to get that darn logo off.

I don't care for them, but I left mine on anyway.....for me it's not worth the trouble to get rid of the logo.

;)

I like the logo and have used my models and they performed well. Real world use out weighs no experience again. DM ;)

They were introduced in 2004 ,I had one rosewood model from 04 and now I have 4 sambar stag models,3 that sit in my gun safe, and one I use all the time for everything, recently my buddy busted the tip clean off less than 5 minutes after borrowing it.I'm at the point now I think the Alaskan guide series is about the best you can buy for a heavy duty folding knife that stays sharp ,not many compare to my rubber vanguard and stag 110 in the real world of using a knife they hold up very well.

I have had one for quite a while. I moved the blade to a Titanium handle. The blade seems to coated with TDLC (Tungsten diamond like Carbon). I use the sides of the blade as a finishing steel to touch up my other knives.

My AGs are 2004. Ordered them when they first showed up at Cabellas. I too removed the logo from one. Paint thinner. Was sorta sorry that I did, later.
Bass Pro hit with their 110 in CPM154 a year or so later. This one is a 2006.
Can't tell much difference in using one or the other. Both stay nice and sharp longer.

I don't EDC mine, but they do get used in my rotation. Mine also have the pivot marks. Its a great knife for the money IMHO too. Early on Buck used to used a "ionfusion" type finish which had the gun metal gray look. They switched a couple years back to the black widow? DLC coating. I have no idea why they switched, but I like both versions. The earlier finish seemed a little more durable as far as scratches and marks (to me anyway) Mine are currently all newer and are etched.

I've never liked the logo much and don't much care for black blades, either........but never felt strongly enough to get serious about doing anything about it. I bought it for points on a whim before I really knew much about S30V.

Just thinking, though......maybe I could send it to one of our excellent bladesmiths and let him keep the blade and trade me a less gaudy blade???

Here is the early finish you speak of Jim. (by the way...thanks for the knife!) I've never really compared this one to the AG and the BP.

I have 4 Sambar Stag AG 110s and one is an occasional user. The other three are on "permanent standby". The user works very well by me. One point that no one on this thread has mentioned (but was brought up in previous threads) is that Buck will sharpen the AG 110s for free. All you do is ship it to Buck and they'll do the rest. I usually sharpen and touch up my own knives, and I've become quite proficient sharpening S30V on diamond stones, but it is really nice to know that this service exists in case you really dull a blade and want to start with a factory edge again as a base point.

Oh, and the yellow logo pad stamp. It comes off anyway if you really use the knife. The one on my user came mostly off when I was cutting enconchatas, corn husks, for a large party once. The black coating was unmarred.

Lots of good info here. Thanks guys. I only started getting serious about Buck knives in 09, though I owned a couple years before. So everything prior to that I know only what I've learned here. So thanks again!

Yes, that looks alot like it Tony! I am glad that you love that 110! She's a beauty!
Now we need a comparison shot of the AG, BP, and your Buckcote.... :D (please)

Those AG 110s are fantastic, and I really like the logo!I have one rosewood that I use and got lucky by calling around to different Cabela's stores around the U.S. and an employee found an Ironwood version for me.He said you may not want this one because the blade has been scribed on,if you do I'll give you 20% off. This was after they had sold out everywhere and the blade was signed and dated by Chuck and C.J. Buck. This one is a collector and I don't use it.I was so impressed by the AG series that I also bought an AG Vanguard eventually and the quality of that one is over the top too.I bet you could skin a herd of Buffalo without touching it up on a stone.

Here is my comparison photo. AG, Early BuckCote,BP.

Side note. While outside this morning to take the pic, I heard an auctioneer doing his thing. Walked over to the neighbors and bought a 4 dot and 1990 110 for $15. They may go off for spa treatment.
There was also a 501, a 500, and 503...all badly beaten. My heart got pumping when I saw a 560 box, but that was it....just a box. This was no ITE moment, but we can't all be so lucky.

Pack, Your Avatar Turkey looks to be foraging on dry ground. The AG came out in 2004 and the BP later. Good info.. Do you think they have run there course or will still be offered? The BP is getting very hard to find. DM

The AG 110 is one of my very favorites.
But I didn't care for the AG logo.

Luckily, it was easy to remove....

I used a razor to remove the logo and then Mas metal polish to remove the residual "ghost image".
