Greetings you all :)

I wanted to post this for a few days but I just read Jackknife's thread about small knives.
Oh well :p

Before my whole knife crazyness began in 2004 I got along just fine with my old army issued SAK Soldier Alox I brought home when I completed my mandatory service.

I literally used the knife for everything. The tools as well.
The blade for cutting of course, the awl for pre drilling holes in wood or another hole in my belt, the screwdrivers for screws and light prying and the canopener when I couldn't fine one fast enough.

Then I discovered Spyderco. I collected and carried almost everey fully serrated mmodel they made.
Then there was the news of the upcoming new knife laws over her which will forbit one hand openers.

I stumbled about this forum and tried the "american traditionals".
How much I like Case knives and such, but it wasn't completele for me.
Tried Opnel and I still like them.
But then there is the moisture problem.

Well, to make an already long story not any longer, I suddenly remembered my SAK Soldier.
Couldn't find it back, so I ordered another one.
And it just feels like a sort of a homecoming.

Worry free, solid as a tank and easy to sharpen. Edgeholding about the same as Opinel au carbon, but not the worries about moisture or rust.

The basic tools I actually use and the knife is as traditional/oldschool over here as is the Barlow for example over in the States.

So my knife carry is just my SAK soldier Alox in my pocket and a Alox Silver Classic on my key ring.

Just wanted to share this ;)

Alox soldier and Alox Classic are great knives. I was using my Alox Soldier last weekend to remove some screws and handed it to my wife would dropped it onto the concrete. It must have fallen right on the open tool and jammed it because it doesn't snap closed now. I have to figure out how to get it working smoothly again.

Great thoughts, spydutch. I've got an Alox Soldier in my pocket right now, along with a Case Tiny Trapper. Hard to beat the old soldier for an all around great working knife. I guess if it was good enough to be the official knife of the Swiss Army for 40+ years, it's good enough for me. I tried the "new" soldier too, but didn't need that much knife. The old alox is much easier in the pocket, too.

Thanks for your story!

I like the farmer with the saw. Not much that can't be done with it.

I carried a Soldier for years ,but my most carried pocketknife is still my simple red plastic Spartan my dad bought me as a kid. Any SAK is going to be worth the time...
Strange thing is that when my granddad died, I found a bunch of his knives and they were all of the traditional kind. (I remember even my dad had a small Buck). So it wasn't always all SAK here in Europe...

Amen, brother. Welcome home. Great post.
