Camp/Tactical Axe hybrid??

I'm totally uninitiated in the world of axes. I recently came back from a camping trip where an axe would have come in handy for chopping wood and some other stuff. Of course, I've got a bit of a tactical bent myself. Is there such a thing as a cross between a camp axe and a tactical hand axe?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

A more "tactical" 'hawk will have a spike on the opposite side from the blade. A "camp" type of 'hawk will have a hammer head on the opposite side. I've never seen or heard of a hybrid of the two. Anyone else?

Well, Hank, I think I understand what you're saying. In my experience, hybrid -- do-it-all tools -- are generally a compromise that seldom excel at any one particular thing. However, I don't believe that the characteristics of a good tactical hawk & those of a good camp hawk are mutually exclusive.

A hammer poll is certainly useful for driving stakes & such but it could also have martial applications. I know I certainly wouldn't want to be hit by one. ;) As to the utility value of a spike, when I was talking to Bill Buxton about making me a spike hawk, he told me how he uses one to help start screw-in tree steps for stand hunting. This thread contains an impressive list of uses that Brian Jones, Radio Ray & Doc Ron's team found for the ATC Ranger Spike Hawk in the Idaho wilderness.

I guess my point is that a well designed & well made hawk can have uses beyond those that it's appearance might suggest at first glance.

Strider makes a tomahawk that has the ability to have different attachments bolted to the back of the head.

Okay, point taken. Let's alter the discussion a bit to address economics. What about cost? Are there any good deals to be had on a quality hawk that doesn't surpass $100?

Drop Bill Buxton a line, explain what you have in mind, and see what he can do for you. You can follow my "toys" link below & go to my Hawk page to see a couple of examples of his work.

You might also want to check out H&B Forge -- great "bang for the buck" & he also produces some that are not shown on his site. Try seaching this forum for examples.

Have fun choosing & welcome to the wonderful world of hawks. ;)

Two Hawks' least expensive models are right around $100 and an excellent value at that price. www.2hawks.net I have 3 of his hawks and like them a lot. I also have one of the less expensive H & B Forge Shawnees and it's a good hawk---just not as finely crafted and finished.
