Can anyone make a "replica" UltraMarine?

Don't need the extra crap, I'll make my own sheath. All I'm looking for is the blade and tang, which is all one piece. This $800 knife seems to be the only thing with all the features I'm looking for. I do plan on keeping it for a very long time, so a rockwell hardness of 58 would be prefered, and if it helps with the price, I can do my own corrosion resistant coating. I'd also prefer a black color for night carry, but that would probably add to the already high price, so I can do that too.

Any price quotes? Recommendations?

Wrong sub-forum to make your query. Try the makers sub-forum.

FWIW. . .most makers here won't touch a "replica."

Doh, my apologies. Any moderators here feel free to move it so I don't end up making another.

Any specific reason why makers stay away from "replicas"? I may have chosen the wrong word there, the Ultramarine is just something with all the features I'm looking for.

brousblades, checking it out now.

This is a relatively new forum, Spark's way of giving the Knifemakers as many outlets as possible and organized contacts as possible.

The problem is, Extrema Ratio went to the trouble of developing that design, testing it, deciding on materials and a manufacturing process. A replica rewards their creativity by paying another maker for their design.

Granted, that design may be fairly common, but knifemakers themselves thrive on their own signature designs, materials, fit and finish. Being asked to copy someone else cheapens the work of the manufacturer and the knifemaker.

I'm not sure hiring a craftsman to make one knife with all of these particulars and specs will save you any money at all.

You should just save up and buy the original. You'll save yourself and the maker a lot of trouble and maybe even money.

All I wanted was a line cutting hook, serrated edge, spear tip, and something I can make shift into a spear. If that's a $800 design then I suppose I should move on.

I'm seeing 70-$200 custom knives, and for something as simple as I'm asking, I don't see how buying something that's 800 is a better idea.

I think my point is getting confused here, I probably should have explained better, so my apologies - I'm simply looking for something that has all those common features of a $40 knife, just with that combination. For some odd reason a knife like this isn't offered, except in a $800 format. That $800 knife comes with a box, a ton of accessories I don't need, probably insanely high rockwell hardness, coating from NASA, etc...

That's not what I want.

Just the blade, and tang. That's it.

That you can get. :)

To us, replica means "make me one that looks like this expensive knife, but I want it cheap". What you really want, you just said: a dive knife with certain characteristics, for example (ER Ultramarine) but without the glitz.

So I had this long justification for buying a "replica" written up, went to hit submit, and the page refreshed to some full length reply page with an empty reply field. Anyway, I basically was explaining how I don't have the $ for the Ultramarine, and I couldn't justify paying 800 even if I had it. So no matter what, I wouldn't be buying it, it's money extreme ratio would never see anyway. Thus, they aren't losing money.

I was thinking about going into the knife making business. Get a couple knife designs down that are rare and still easy to make, get a tempered metal supplier, grab a grinder.... I have a perfectionists artistic hand. I could definitely make money.

Brous Blades, would it make it easier if I supplied the pre tempered metal?
