Can someone explain this to a dummy?

I'm tossing the idea around of making my own 2x72, I think I've settled where to get pulleys and contact wheels. Now, is it possible to make a home made tracking mechanism with parts from a hardware store? I've read Wayne G's book (50$ knife shop) it has info about them but not enough on how to make one or really how it works. How does a tracking mechanism work? I've seen one but not close enough to be able to mentally pick it apart to be able to create my own.

No reason you can't make your own. They are not complicated. If I ever get the batteries I ordered with my camera I will get some pics of the Unigrinder posted w/ some close ups of the tracking mechanism.
