I'd like to take up tomahawk throwing. I guess I need to set up a "tossery range". I would appreciate it if the experienced members would point me in the right direction. I need help with such fundamental questions as these... What is the normal throwing distance? How much room will I need behind and to the sides of the target for safety. What do you use for a target? Is there a good instructional video to get? Thank you for your kind assistance.

p.s.: FWIW, I have an ATC Vietnam Tactical on order.
p.p.s: Are there any gathering places to throw tomahawks in the vicinity of Southern Virginia?

Talk to Bobby Branton, Andy Prisco or Justin Gingrich.

Start off with about 14 feet and adjust from there for a single turn throw. Hawks are easy to throw and lots of fun.

Rev, I find that the ATC Vietnam Tactical throws great for me from 12', which is about a full step closer to the target than I stand with most other hawks. I believe the shorter handles result in faster rotations. In any case, here are some links that you may want to check out:

How to Throw a Tomahawk -- very basic instructions

A Basic Manual on Tomahawk Throwing -- more detailed, illustrated, instructions from the American Mountain Men Association

Tomahawk Throwing -- good throwing insights including cautions against throwing too hard or adding wrist action

Good luck & have fun!

Gentlemen, thank you for your help. At the Blade show I got to see Bobby Branton's inspiring knife and tomahawk throwing demo. The links will get me started and I know where to go for additional help.
