While at my father-in-law's farm this weekend I was able to dig up some nice blacksmithing tools. Among them were a Plumb 3lb or so cross pein, small sledge and these tongs:

Any idea about what these are for?

I have pair just like them. I bought them from a farrier's supply.

I used a pair exactly like that this past weekend at a hammer-in. They are a little on the short side but will work.

Could they be shears?? Hold the hot steel where you want to cut or maybe even make a sharp bend or fold and whack the top of the shear?

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

They are horse shoe tongs.

Hmmm. Wonder if those wells in the center of the tongs is where you would position the (for lack of a better word) nipples on the ends of each side of the horse shoe?

hy people,

I've seen these tongs in a farrier supplie shop. I asked the owner why they had the hole inside them and he assured it was just for better grip. Not so strange, since they decrease the surface of the tong, it's possible to apply more pressure on the heated metal (pressure being the force divided by surface whereon the force works).

See you,

Tim
