Re: Uncle Bill's Stage Stop and Cantina / an introduction.

Allow me to introduce myself as the original identifier of the HIKV syndrome that infects all who hang around long enough and what has become known as the Cantina.

A few years back before we had grown to near our present size, Uncle Bill was moderating this forum on another site. I found him amazingly soft spoken and tolerant, often using an unusual closing phrase to his posts. It went like this:

"What does this have to do with Kukuris? Everything!"

It was a relatively Zen place open to 1) people being allowed to be themselves totally and still be accepted, 2) or once learning the rules, being allowed to be creative and play in persona. It has since become traditional to play in persona much of the time ( as in my hothead Yosemite Sam style rants ) but in the event of someone's need the first rule is to give precedence to taking care of those who are hurting.

In any event I observed the forum was much like the Bar scene in the very first Star Wars movie. Others opined it was closer to Spider Robinson's Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, or the like. Inevitably it went from Star Wars Cantina to Uncle Bill's Stage Stop ( Reno having been involved with many historical events ) and Cantina!

So it is and was and shall be as long as it survives.

Come here to learn,

Stay to play,

and above always, maintain it as a fellowship ready to respond to a member's dark night of the soul.

And Uncle Bill won't object too hard if you buy a khuk or three now and then. Really!

And equally amazingly, if you do that, you can actually strike a personal blow against Maoist terrorism directed against the poorest of the poor, here in the First Age of the Third Millennium!

It also helps if you can imagine your fellow forumites as veddy veddy polite great white sharks wearing dress jacket and white tie, sipping stirred, not shaken martinis at an English gentlemen's club. To the background music from "Jaws".

Until Uncle Bill initiates a feeding frenzy by putting out and UBDOTD ( Uncle Bill's Deal Of The Day ) or a PGA ( Pala's Give-Away ). What happens then isn't pretty, but it's usually over before newbies notice it.

Welcome to all you new guys. I have been too busy to respond to too many threads and give you individual welcomes. I look forward to getting to know you all.

And far as thread veer, that's what is part of the charm. The most mundane of topics can get into arcana of spirituality, or turn into a raspberry session. You'll never know what you missed if you don't read it.

After all, the (sound of large cymbal being struck) BOOOOMB thread that wouldn't die ran over a thousand posts of sophomoric senility abd claimed to be humor ( out of deference to Uncle Bill, let it rest in peace til it's resurection can really blindside him with it's return.

Just goes to show what happens when grown men lapse into the hysterical. And try to sucker the rest along. Must harvest more cactus buttons. ( I did mention the Ghost Dance came from the res just 30 miles north of me where I worked for years, didn't I? ).

Rusty,

See Woodowl's thread---it has been summoned up from the Depths by none other than Uncle Bill HIMSELF:eek:

I like that.

Hello everyone. I hope everything is going well for all. Apologies for not checking in sooner but things have been busy, ( 'spring' cleaning and a couple of non-knife related projects ).

Did I see someone mention a 'hawk? Hmm. I feel an itch in my wallet...

We were afraid they had caught you out in the bogs, chopping "protected species" with your AK. GOOD to see you back :D

The Cantina is indeed a fellowship - a brotherhood of THE blade. It has everything to do with Khukuris....and people who have to do with them.

Thank you kindly gentlemen :)

This is without a doubt the friendliest forum that I have seen, and that is a testament to the fine people that come here. I got an email from Rob the other week asking how I was because I hadnt been around a while. Put a big smile on my face just like Walosi's kind words.

Anyone want to share some more information with me about this hawk I saw mentioned now? Pretty please.

The authorities have not apprehended me yet, cackle cackle...hold on a minute, there's someone at the door...

New Guys,
DUCKS ARE HARMLESS!HEE! You all are gonna have fun! You will fins, help, knowledge & a great bunch here, great for retired folks too!

Yes. Definitely easy sailing. Just don't look back or you might see a Tsunami gaining on you.

The quiet of the darkened hospital room is shattered as the young Wildlife Officer springs erect in his bed screaming: "Ducks Are Harmless...thats what he said - DUCKS ARE HARMLESS!!!"

Rushing towards his room with meds in hand, the psychiatric nurse murmers to herself: "Now he'll start screaming about the bats...and the caped man...and The Cave..."
