I am considering a knife with carbon fiber handles. I have read good and bad. It's a small knife and will ride in my pocket. I am leaning towards G10, but don't have a carbon fiber knife, and it certainly has a "cool factor". How does this hold up in EDC?
Opinions?

Bobby-

I've carried a Kit Carson small Model 4 with carbon fiber handles (all carbon fiber--no liners or bolsters) in my pocket every day for more than six months, and use it often. It shows no significant signs of wear. However, I do not carry it with coins, keys or other hard objects in the same pocket. Don't know what effect that would have, if any.

In the comparison between carbon fiber or G10 scales, I don't
think the material makes as much of a difference as does the
texture and feel in the hand. For example, my Sifu has carbon
fiber but its smooth and slippery when wet. My G10 Kershaw miniTask
is the same way. But my Kershaw Avalanch has a bunch of texture
scribed into the G10 so it has a good grip, even with sweaty hands.

One reason I got the carbon for the Sifu was the lighter weight,
since this is already a big knife. Now if I can only figure
out how to texture the scales...?

I have carried a Lightfoot 460 Magnum with Carbon Fiber for my EDC on occassion for about 10 months. It holds up very well, however, I do not carry other things that would bump up against it in my pocket. I also have G10 and Micarta, but they feel and weight are definitely different. If you don't have a knife in Carbon Fiber, get one and try it out. You might like it.

Carbon fiber is the most durable scale material that I know of. You can easily carry a carbom fiber knife in you pocket with coins, keys, and other stuff with very little scratching. I have owned several carbon fiber scaled knives and a I strongly recommend it.

I, also, have found carbon fiber to be very durable for EDC. This stuff is designed to be tough and strong and IMO it lives up to it's billing.

I intend to carry it daily in my pocket with an ever changing mix of assorted crap: coins, keys, etc.
To me if a knife can't handle that, it isn't much good as an EDC...
Thanks for the opinions, I think I'll try it. It's on all of your heads if I don't like it !!!:p
Thanks,
Rob

I've carried a Beretta Avenger as a back up on and off for about a year. It can,t be beat for lightness or cool factor,(it even has a VG-10 Carbon Fiber laminate blade) this is one strong knife and has wickedly sharp blade. I would recomend it for anyone. My only complaint is the name,"Avenger", I don't think that would go over very well in front of a judge or jury, if it should ever come to that.

I've carried my Boker Orion/2065 clipped in my pocket along with coins, keys, a baccy tin, various lighters, it's never picked up a single scratch. It's also been dropped, kicked along a concrete floor, and other assorted accidents. Still not a single scratch on the carbon fibre handle.

carried my MT LCC daily for several months, some scuffs on the ti bolsters, but none on the handle, at all - also grips very well for me, not slipppery at all

carry a M16-00 CRKT for a utility knife daily, have had it almost a yr, again, no probs at all w/the CF.....

just got a ralph mini maxx w/CF, and so far so good, excellent gripping ability, seems to be wearing just fine.....

in summary, i dont think ya will ahve any probs w/CF handles on any decent made knife, and it looks pretty cool too - have to say G10 is my #2 fav handle material though, nothing wrong w/it, but CF imho looks better

micarta and ti is good too, but please, no more zytel, it looks so, well, cheap imho

I regularly carry an LCC with CF scales, and have not noticed any scratches or significant wear. The scales look as good as new. CF was designed to be strong and lightweight, and as an added bonus it looks real nice too. I think it is a good material for scales on an EDC, unless you want something with a very agressive texture for extra grip.

My LCC has a few scratches on the bolsters, but the CF scales are as good as the day I got the knife. CF holds up very well, and it is real pretty to boot.
