Anyone messed with carbon fiber much? I have been playing with some pieces of it this week and was wondering if when used for a knife handle if a finish is applied to it? like epoxy, poly or anything? I found out playing with it that it polishes up and smoothes out extremly well, on one piece i applied hand rub poly on it and it gave it a real depth almost a 3D look to it, but not sure if poly will hold up on a carbon knife handle, so thought i would ask the experts.

Yeah It polishes up nicely. Grind it outside and start sanding until you reach about 2000 grit. Buff it for the best 3D look. Its harmful to the lungs and splinters hurt like helll but I like that look for a hi-tek knife. It wears out drill bits and saw blades also.

Thanks Bruce,

Yes it does polish out nice. I noticed that there was quite a bit of black dust around when working with it, and got quite a few little spliters in my hand from it, started using a ventialtor mask, I also tried wet sanding it and seems like I got the best finish with that method and it also kept the dust and stuff down. Have you ever tried using something like Polyurathane on it when its done? the piece i tried it on looks amazing, all I did was use rub on poly and used it very thinly, but it gave the CF a very nice wet look and enhanced the 3D look, but like I said im not sure of the wear the poly would have, would like to know or find something simulor to use.

By the way looked at your site and found the Ivory quillion dagger to be amazing, along with the others, but that knife is just awesome.

Thanks for the complement. I do like daggers.

I beleive the poly will be sticky after a few uses. Carbon Fiber will polish to nearly as shiney as the wet look that poly gives it. It is pretty tough stuff to sand to that extent but the results are awsome. White or pink rouge work good for buffing compounds. I suspect the splinters, dust and hard polishing are why people dont use alot of CB. Only 4 or 5 knives with it for me.

I have used carbon fiber on 5 different knives, the last two I did, I somehow put some pretty deep scratches in it, and I was having a really hard time getting them out, I got them out, and then got sick of sanding, so just to see what it looked like after sanding to around 400 grit, I buffed the handles with some black greasy 320 grit compound I have, and the CF obviously wasn't as shiny as when I use pink or white to finish it, but it took much less time, and the pattern seemed to stand out more than when I polish it with finer grits. I liked it that way, and so did the people who bought the knives. Just thought I would share this with you guys who are sick of spending lots of time on CF.

My take on poly now: I did a piece with poly and carried it the last two days, and what I have noticed is the poly will scratch, not real easy mind you but it will, so poly is not the way to go, next step is your way, ill will try it with the high grits to see hw i can do with it.

Thanks
