Carbon fibre knives

I've recently seen some knives that are very cheap and claim to be very durable. I am curious to know whether they are actually any good at all? How far are they from metal cutting power? Can you even sharpen them? They have no metal parts at all!

You sure the blades are carbon fiber? There are nonmetallic knives, but none I know of are made of CF.

The only caron fiber blade I know of that will cut is a laminate blade designed by Warren Thomas

All the rest are straight blades good for stabbing, or made out of some other resin impregnated material.

G10 carbon fiber and other plastics. Sand paper seems to sharpen well fine 400 grit or finer, as for cutting the serated ones seem to work best.Chris

I have heard and seen G-10 and zytel and other polymer knives. I just have never seen one made of CF.

You just have to think of the medium that is being cut slashed or stabed. Is it stonger than the materials bieng used? Serations make a big difference when plastic is brought into play. as far as price you can go from around $5.00 to $100+ for busse stealth hawk or their are many custom makers that run about $30 on up. I think Ether may be talking about a knife I have seen on eBay... It is an all carbon fibre skeleton knife. One piece. Comes already "Sharpened".

It's advertised as a knife that can go through metal detectors, because there is no metal in it.

I'll look around and try to find a pic and post it later.

I think you may be talking about the "Delta Dart." Check out the link i've posted. Either way, it's sweeeeet! Great for use as back-up. I remember seeing it in the U.S. Cavalry catalog, and you can use it for anything from a weapon, a back-up, or a tent stake. Would be a GREAT addition to a survival kit, because it's cheap, (LESS than $10.00!!!) therefore disposable if need be, light, slim, and small. I've always wanted one...don't know why I never got one. Probably soon.

Enjoy!

TantoT/Chris, Who made that knife and what are the specs on it?
Reminds me of one I made last year... a lot. My ex ended up with it, I was stoopud and gave it to her not to long before we broke up.

If I can find a pic of it, I'll post it, just as an example.

I was all hot about g-10 and non-metallics, and was investing a lot of my time into researching such things/building blades from composite materials (even a couple carbon fibre hollow spikes), until 9/11, and that day, before knives were even mentioned, I saw it was going to be about pointless to continue with that avenue.

I've seen knives made from solid Carbon Fibre, but I'd rather use G-10.
A serrated G-10 blade WILL cut meat... and its not hard to touch up.
Not as hard as steel... not nearly, but its not as soft as zytel either, not nearly so. And like I said, will cut meat (serrated edge especially...)

If I was doing a Carbon Fibre knife, I'd do it like Warren Thomas, CF overlayed onto titanium, chisel ground, so the titanium is the edge, and carbide on the edge... for better cutting.

I see not much point in non-metallics besides James Bond/Gadget factor, since carrying on a plane is nill anyway...
Light-weight? titanium or talonite fills in for light weight.
Cuts better too.
Ceramics are cool, as they really cut, and I see a place for anyhting that really cuts like steel (or that can cut steel )
But I dont see any point to metal detector avoiding now... likely to get caught, and more trouble if you do.

I'll carry steel(or something that really truly cuts) anywhere I can now...
And A cane anywhere I cant carry an edged weapon.
