I've often read posters refer to cardboard belts or wheels when polishing blades. I've stropped on cardboard before, but I was just given a delta shopmaster 1 inch belt sander and was going to try and find some cardboard belts for it to tinker with. Anybody know a a good source for them. I believe the delta uses 41 or 42 inch belts.

Thanks guys,
Jon

Uhm... wouldn't/couldn't you just turn an old belt inside out?

I didn't think about that, but the belts that came with the sander are cloth backed. I guess cloth might get a result close to what the cardboard would, but I would worry that the abrasive side might do some damage to the wheels once you turn them inside out. I don't want to grind up the working parts:eek:

Maybe you're thinking of the paper wheels you put on a grinder. One side with silicone carbide to sharpen and the other hard pressed paper to polish and remove the bur.I never heard of the belt either.

contact me if you want to know more about the wheels, thats all i use for sharpening my knives. as for polishing, the cardboard buffing wheel works good on small items but for blades it doesnt work too well. its hard to get a smooth even finish throughout the blade.

I don't think cardboard would stand up to a belt sander/grinder... but I know leather does, and I have a 1x30" leather belt a couple feet away, waiting to get set up on my sander/grinder.
