Carryable Tantos

I'm in the hunt for a good tanto fixed-blade, preferably with a slim profile (like the CS Kobun).

I've seen some *very* nice-looking customs, as the one at Sunrise Custom Knives or some of Mike Snody's designs. Anyone else have any opinions (or better yet, direct experience) with a Japanese-style production or custom blade along these lines?

Thanks for all help!!

and I have a serrated Kobun for sale cheap on the individual forums, if you want to practice carrying a tanto before spending a lot on a custom. I generally don't carry it much, but when I do it's small-of-back and it absolutely disappears, until you need it.

The Jones Brothers make some really cool, slender fixed blade tantos! Both single and double ground!

Bill Siegle makes a nice "Combat Tanto" with an IWB sheath and flat cordwrapped handle. Very heavy duty knife, but not too obtrusive.

Regarding that quote, you've got mail!

Thanks for the info, too. Much obliged to all who have responded (and to those who have yet to respond).

Check out colemanmade.com for Ketih Coleman knives. He's a local in ABQ and makes great stuff. I'll get one of his Recon's as soon as I get some cash....

Here's one I got from forum member Gary Bradburn, his neck tanto in D-2 steel. This is truly a functional, well-executed design.

i just LOVE my CS Kobun plain edge. sharp as heck, CHEAP. made in Japan, and yes, it flat out evaporates in the small of the back. i carry it all the time when taking public transportation at night, but the blade length is too much for carrying here in chicago, and the LEO's here are very UNsympathetic. so i usually carry my spyderco Dragonfly (friggin' 2.5" blade length limit) until i get my Runningdog little Pup this week. but the Kobun really is VERY VERY nice!!

I have a Chris Reeve Tanto1. You did not state how long of a blade you wanted but the CR T1 has a 9" double ground tanto blade that some how feels/carries like a smaller knife. It surprised me but I even like the metal handle.
According to CRK's this is a special run model that is made only once or twice a year.

I have some of Bill Siegles work, and I am very pleased with it.

If I were you, I would consider a japanese style tanto, with a more swept/rounded tip, thus better for utility work. Then you have a great work knife that can also do admirably in the gravest extremes.
