Having grown up in Tanzania where basically anything is legal to carry, I am now moving to England. As I have understood it, no knives of any length are legal to be carried in public places. Is this correct? What do the English people of this forum carry?

Welcome to Bladeforums! :D

Actually, they carry a great variety of legal, useful knives. We'll need a local to explain the details, but for practical purposes, you will have to restrict EDC to a short blade with no lock, basically a traditional slipjoint or the modern equivalent.

For work or recreational purposes, you are allowed more interesting cutlery :)

You can carry in public a folding none locking knife with a blade under 3 inches long without a reason. If you want to carry a bigger knife, a locker or a fixed blade you will need a "reasonable excuse" for example if you need a big knife for your work but you could not carry it outside work. You can also carry a larger knife if it part of a national custume, for example Scots and Sikhs are allowed to carry fixed blades because its part of their traditional dress. Self defence is not a reasonable excuse for carrying a bigger knife and will get in in trouble with the law. You can also be arrested if you use a knife in an offensive or threatening way even if it is under 3 inches long. For more information ... http://www.britishblades.com/forums/index.php?

Thanks for the quick relplys guys. It seem I'll have to dust-off the ol' swissarmy knife then...

It isn't written in stone either, it depends on the Bobby that nicks you and the circunmstances.

If you are not acting a tool and you have a Grip or A/F Covert folder on you, it isn't a given that you will get done.

Welcome to Bladeforums! I'll move this thread to the Knife Laws forum for you.
