CASE 6104 knife - PARTS?

I rec'd a Case 6104 knife from *bay that was (obviously) much poorer condition than described, but I want to try to salvage and fix it up a bit. It's a 6104. Here's it's problems: The blade has been ground to the worst shape I think I've ever seen, with a much shorter length and strange shape. It's just worthless. The CASE emblem is also gone.

Otherwise, it's a nice looking knife with some beautiful wear and looks to it that I want to keep that way.

My question: Can these parts be replaced, and how would I go about getting the parts and getting the work done.

Most importantly: Is it worth the $ to do all this to a knife with no emotional attachment, just a fond wish to see it get the proper fixups to give it some respect?

Thanks for your help.

Case replaces blades for a very reasonable cost but there is the chance of the scales being broken in the process. It would likely be replaced with a SS blade and a modern Case shield.

The 6104 was a budding or grafting knife and only had a single short spey blade to begin with...how badly is your cut up? Pic?

That's a 61048.

Case could reblade that knife but it would cost something since a worn blade is not a warranty repair. It would be a reasonable cost though.

Nope...as I said most likely a new SS blade. They simply don't have old blade blanks lying around.

From what I can tell, that blade looks just fine. Sure, it's been through a lot, and has been sharpened down some, but there's still plenty of blade left.

Any possibility of finding another knife th swap parts with, or is it a futile effort?

I understand your wanting to save the knife. Cost wise though, unless you are able to do the work and have the parts, its really not worth it IMHO.

Case will reblade the knife, last time I sent one in it was 10.00. However, there is always the chance the scales will break during disassembly, and in that case you will probably get charged for the scales too. Even if they don't charge for the scales they will replace them with current or recent production scales, so the character of the old knife is gone.... So in the end, you will end up basically getting a new knife if they do the blade and scales.

They can still be found reasonably priced, in good condition. So I would just commit that one to being a user and look for another one if you like that pattern. YMMV

Do any of you want it? N/C for the first yes. Just send your email address to me and I'll send it your way. I just want it to have a home where it can be better appreciated.

Not to beat a dead horse and I hope you don't see it as criticism, it's not, but I would have kept it and enjoyed it as is. I know what it's like to be disappointed with what you get from an auction, it can really be annoying.

You might get lucky and pick up a really worn out knife for the shield, which I can totally understand, but the blade wasn't that bad. I would have put a good edge on it and enjoyed the knife for what it is. Probably made up a lot of stories in my head for what it might have gone through, how it got used to the point it was. It wasn't, to me, all that used up, has plenty of life left in it, and a great story to tell, even if only in my head. If it's loose it can be tightened easily enough, but other than that, it's a nice knife. I hope the new owner enjoys it, and good on you for passing it along to someone who will.

Again, please don't take this as criticism, just throwing my (probably inflated)2 cents out there.

Consider that purchase a lesson learned. I did the same thing. Someone grinded a blade way short, but tried to keep the shape the same. I could not tell from the picture, but it was obvious when I bought the knife and closed it. The tip stuck out while in the closed position and it was about 1/4" short. I use that knife as a beater, it bounces around in my tool box. I am sorry for you, but at least you will not do it again. Always request a picture of the knife closed, a birdseye view if you will, if it is something you really want. Pass on it if they will not do it or ignore your request, another will come along shortly.

Heck, I'll take it if you're willing to send it my way. E-mail on its way.

Jim, that was a nice thing to do.

David will make that knife a good home.

Thanks for the kind words, Frank. I love a good working knife, especially if it's been worn in a bit. By the way, that stockman has been working out great for work. That main clip blade has quite some snap to it. Really great quality.
