A large Case dealer has exclusively comissioned Case to bring back yellow delrin as the handle material for Case's 3 7/8" pattern # 47 Stockman (Case SS 3347 Large Stockman).

The knife is 3 7/8" long with the clip blade being 2 15/16" long, the Sheepfoot blade being 2 1/8" long, and the Spey blade being 1 7/8" long. Each blade has it's own spring. The pull for each of the three blades is very even being 5 to 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. All blades are stainless steel. The bolsters are rounded and of course the handles are yellow delrin. The walk is smooth and the snap is very positive. The finish is first rate on this knife -- better than I've see come from Case in awhile. No gaps, blade wobble, and no blade rubbing. The sheepfoot blade of this knife rides nice and low in the frame unlike the # 18 pattern stockman whose sheepfoot blade rides proud and above the handles of the frame -- at least the # 18s I own are that way.

For my .02¢, this large stockman is a great length at 3 7/8" long. Certainly for me, better than the 3318 Stockman at a length of 3 5/8". I also like the # 92 Stockman having a length of 4" long. Here is a photo of the (top to bottom) # 92 Pattern 4", # 47 Pattern 3 7/8", and # 18 Pattern 3 5/8" Case Stockman knives for size comparison. Note that the bolsters for the # 47 Pattern and the # 18 Pattern are rounded while the bolsters for the # 92 Pattern are square and pinched.

I thought I might like the Case 3347 described above so I ordered two of them. I'm glad I did. They are both perfect in everyway -- fit and finish, walk and talk, sharpness out of the box, etc..

I had been waiting a long time for the 47 pattern to be offered again with yeller handles. I bought two also.

Very cool... The 47 is a terrific pattern, and yellow makes it even better. I'm surprised they didn't go with CV though

I am glad to hear that they are back..... I have a couple, one from 1973, and one from 1980. The earlier one is lined with nickel/silver liners, the newer with brass. I carry the later model a lot. I'd say grab them while you can.....

I agree. If they had CV, I'd be all over it. I think the 47 is about the perfect size for a stockman that rides in a pocket.

Case already offered a 3 7/8" stockman with Tru-Sharp blades. AFAIK, Case has not offered that size stockman in CV for at least a few years.
  • To offer the 3 7/8" Tru-Sharp in yellow scales, all they needed was the scales. Not an expensive thing.
  • To offer that size with CV blades they'd have had to fire up a new blade line. Much more expensive.

Ed, that sure is a nice looking knife. I'm partial to 3 7/8" stockman knives.

Good points Frank... I was trying to recall the last 47 that had CV blades, and I can't remember if the Amber bone series had them or not. I know some patterns in that series were available with SS or CV.

Some of the older yellow knives had brighter yellow scales, not sure why Case changed the coloring. IIRC the change appeared after the Dot Series knives. Either way, its good to see them bring back another pattern in yellow

Pretty knife. I don't remember seeing that one.

Nevermind, then.

CV Steel or Tru-Sharp Stainless Steel the key for me and the motivation for me to oreder these particular knives was the yellow delrin handles. Case has not offered the #47 Pattern Stockman with yellow delrin handles whether it be in CV or Tru-sharp in many a year. Yes, Case currently offers the #47 Patern Stockman with various handle material BUT I've been holding out for yellow delrin handles and my wait finally paid off.:)

I prefer CV but let's face it. Case's Tru-Sharp sharpens nicely/easily and holds a good edge. That being the case I sure as heck wasn't goint to pass on a yellow handled, #47 Pattern Stockman. Further, it was the dealer that specified Tru-Sharp.

Don't let the blade steel keep some of you guys from ordering one of these knives. What's not to like about them.

Great looking knife. I realy like the 47 patteren and after EDC my OLD Red PW long enough to have to sharpen it I am getting along with the Case SS. I would like to order one of the new yellow 47's.

It is a good-looking knife. Certainly has me tempted, too. I have a G10-handled '47 pattern in stainless, and it's one of the more comfortable sizes & patterns to use & carry.

And there is at least a glimmer of hope too, knowing the CV blades are available, of perhaps seeing a 'yeller' CV '47 somewhere down the road. We'll have to keep our collective fingers crossed... :)

Case already has CV blades for the '47 pattern, in this currently-available 'Rancher' pattern in 'Burnt Stag' (5347CV):

Absolutely. there are a lot of great choices that only come in SS.... The only real drawback to SS, is no Patina, but I have to remember that not everyone likes their blades to develop patina.

I apologize for drifting off your original pattern topic Ed, but I went to what I thought was the dealer, that you got your 47 from. Guess what I found ?

A full size 2 bladed folding hunter, in yellow and CV... Very cool. Case is really bringing out some great new knives.

This pleases me greatly. :D

I saw a pic of the 'yeller' FH on the site where I found the CV '47 pic posted earlier, but didn't check the details of it at the time. I've been wanting one of these for some time.

Absolutely... I've always thought the large folding hunter is an interesting pattern. I have never gotten one though, because I really prefer my hunting knives to be smaller. I have had thoughts in the past, of getting a nice early red bone version, but the wood scaled versions didn't do much for me.
I'm not well versed in the pattern and could be wrong, but I think this is the frst time that pattern has been offered in yellow. That says a lot to me of the popularity of the yellow scales

I have a few of the '65 pattern hunters, none in yellow. Three are relatively 'old' (1970, 1976 and 1981), and the rest are all post-2000. Truth be told, I don't have much practical use for them either, but I've always been intrigued by the pattern. Also have similar patterns from Schrade and Queen.

I've picked up my copy of 'Pocket Knife Trader's Price Guide', and it lists two 1920-1940 yellow Folding Hunters, one a '3265' (2-bladed Folding Hunter) and a '3465' pattern (a FOUR-bladed Folding Hunter), both in yellow 'composite'. I saw one of the 4-blade versions on the auction site a few years ago, but don't remember what the additional 'blades' were. At any rate, both of those models are 'valued' in my guide at the low end of '$$$$' (the number of '$' is significant ;)) . I'd say there weren't too many of those around, even then. Don't know of any yellow & carbon/CV versions since. I think whatever yellow models might've been produced since then, were all stainless. Those might've been '80s/'90s vintage, but don't know if they even exist. I'll keep checking my book, though (my curiosity is piqued, now).

So, assuming it's really been that long, I guess I better grab one (or two) while I can. :D

The additional "blades" are a bottle opener and a screwdriver. I saw one with bone handles at the Case/Zippo Museum. I took a photo of it but I can't access photobucket right now for some reason.

Thanks.

I was hunting for a photo too. Sometimes, when I see an auction like that, I'll save it to archive or otherwise try to save pics. Don't remember if I did so, with that one. That was 2 computers ago, so if I have it, it's probably buried DEEP in one of my backups somewhere.
