I have a 1973 Case 6383 and am wondering if anyone knows how I can determine the type of steel the blades were made out of. There are no markings like "CV" or "stainless."

Thanks,

How many dots are on the blade? I asked a similar question on here last year, and I think that ten dots are from the 70's, but I don't wanna say for sure.

If it's from that era, unless it says SS for "stainless steel" it's CV. I'm not even sure they made SS models in the 70's but they did in the eighties.

It's a 7-dot which makes it a 1973. So it looks like the concensus so far is that it is CV. I thought as much, but I wasn't sure. Thanks, longbeachguy.

They made some patterns in SS in the 70's, but never the 83 whittler. In fact the first time a standard production 83 was made in SS was in 1999 when they reintroduced the pattern.

Any Case knife made with SS blades in the 60's and 70's will have the word STAINLESS in the main blade tang stamp - CASE XX STAINLESS, CASE XX STAINLESS USA, CASE XX STAINLESS USA with dots.

Simply answer, if it doesn't say "SS" or "Stainless" or has no steel designation on it at all, then it's CV.

Those '83 patterns from the 70's are great to put under glass and even greater to carry and use. The last ones I purchased went for under 50 and I love to carry and use that pattern.
