casters under mill ???

I just got a new mill, and was considering putting casters under it to leave me some options on mobility...

But I know most guys have their machines (mills, lathes, surface grinders, etc.) bolted down with some sort of anti-vibration pad under the base.

Will casters allow too much vibration and reduce the accuracy of the machine???

Due to space issues in this shop, I really hope I can use them...any feed-back would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nick,i've wondered about that myself, mine is bolted to the floor but I would'nt mind making it more portable.I guess you w/ have to use lockable wheels.

I'm on my second milling machine and both have been on stands or tables with wheels on em. No problems at all.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Me and Alan put them on his Mill. works fine make sure they will lock. Kinda a heavy duty stand he built also. Ask him he may post pics

What if you used the caters that flipped up and down ?
you could put a rubber matt down and roll the machine over it, then flip the casters up and have an anti vibration base with no rolling troubles.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer... but I've got the sharpest knife in the room.

Have a tabletop 440lb mill with 35-40lb milling vise on a roll around table. Table is made of 2" square 1/8" wall steel with 1/4" top. Bottom and top also braced in center with 2" sq. tubing. 2 swivel locking and 2 fixed 4" 550lb castors, all welded. No vibration, quiet, mill bolted directly to top. Most tooling stored in 2 metal drawers bolted under top. Helps use my limited/shared space.
