Ceramic rods chipping on sharpmaker

Is this a common problem? I have only sharpened maybe 30 knives on my sharpmaker and I notice there is some small chipping on the rods. One of the coarser stones has a significant chip out of it on the edge encroaching in on the flat side. I have not dropped them or done anything that I noticed as abusive with it. With the other rods, I can't see obvious chips, but can "feel" them on a couple of the edges when using them.

Will the chipping effect performance? I would suspect it would but I'm not sure. The ceramic ones as opposed to the diamond ones are pretty cheap. So if I'm hurting my knives I'll just get new ones, but if it doesn't matter, I won't.

They should not chip from being used.

Are they chipped at the corners of the triangles on the end of the stones? I've seen them come with the chips when they were in clam packs.

If it's a ripple/bump on the stone, I think this is normal and is not supposed to affect performance.

They should be smooth in order to get a sharp knife. Unless you dropped them (ceramic is brittle) and damaged them I'd send them back for replacement. Sounds like a factory goof to me.

I have a very old sharpmaker, my white triangle rods have chips/grooves I think from sharpening an old serrated standard, then a worker.

Each rod has at least one good edge left, when they get so bad I can't ignore it, I will buy a whole new set, so I can get the dual angle & may also get the diamond rods as well.

Do the old grey course rods fit the new base?

i use my SM all the time, mostly with the white rods and they have no chipping/etc at all.

I have some rods that have developed tiny chips; I have no idea how they got there because I've never dropped the stones. I also have one white rod that has a "ripple".
