here it is this was made from one 16" chain to see if it could be done ( this was real pain i had to work close to the hot steel because the billet was real small to start it was 1/2"x1/2" x2" the what you see is 6 1/2"x 1"x 1/8"thick still need to heat treat and temper the pattern will be more pronounced after it is hardened what do you think Russ

Gotta ask since I don't know no better. How in the world do you get the chain into a billet? Lay chain between two chunks of 1018 or?? Would love to try that and HD chain if you would share how to make up the billet for hammering.

To do the chain you can either cut and stack it then wire it together or tack weld it together then forge the links together on the pin side first or else the links will seperate on you....Good luck and keep us posted on how you do..
Russ,AWSOME work...Can't wait to see the finished blade.

thanks bruce now i need to figure out what to use as handle material maybe rosewood and brass

Beautiful blade Rotor!

After the initial forging heats to close the
links up, how many times does the billet need to be folded to get the best pattern and to insure that the billet is fully welded through and through? (My forge is nearing completion and I've been eying those chains myself!)

Second question. Is the chain itself, as well as the teeth, high carbon steel?

I've read that chainsaw makes some fo the better cutting Damascus. The cutters will be some kind of high carbon, the pins and linls will probably be at leasy medium carbon.

I have a bunch of chain saved up, just haven't got to it yet.

Rotor vey nice

Russ-

That's awesome!

I think that with my little forge nearing the dawn of completion, I will be trying some of that.

It sounds very tricky! Bruce Evans needs to come up here and teach us how to forge!

I think I can pound that chain hard enough to make some damascus...

Thanks for sharing

i did a second billet comprised of 3 chains
it didnt weld up as well i would have liked
only 1/2 was usable. I wasnt clinching my teeth together right i guess, some days i can get it right other days might as well be useing a rawhide mallet and arubber anvil but i save the mistakes and beat into something later thanks for the kind words well off to do some more heating and beating. Nick,i would love to come back up to my home area and help you out.Maybe someday I will be able to afford to fly the family up to Portland to visit my Dad and come on up and see you...
One thing to remember when starting out this type of billet, start slow in small sections and don't hit it hard nice sturdy even lighter hits will keep you even and let it weld...As for the folding ,The more times that you fold it the more the pattern washes out and you cannot tell that you used a chain.I have found that if you make the stack about 1/2 -3/4 inch tall and about two -three links wide you can get a blade by folding once on edge and then stretching out the bar to a blade.I havent done a chainsaw chain in awhile so maybe I will do one here pretty soon and see what I can get for a pattern.I am finishing one out of a gear drive chain that looks pretty awsome.I will post the pictures when it is done.
