Not everybody knows about Charlie Weiss. He has a very nice piece of work in Phil Lobred's collection: http://www.sanfranciscoknives.com/knives/2187LG.html

I didn't know Charlie until we met at the BLADE Show last year. One thing lead to another and I got an opportunity to shoot some of his knives. He's a Guild member and very devoted to his craft. Charlie does his own engraving. Take a look:

Not all to my taste, but there are some real beauty's there!

I particulary like the detailed butt-caps on the stag-handled bowies! Nice detail.

Thanks for posting.

Kind regards,

Jos

Charles made me my first two customs. The knives were beautiful but they would not cut nor could I get them sharp. This was back in the 70's.
Tnx for the pix!

Jos summed up my thoughts well. No doubt that Charles Weiss has exceptional skills...lots of them!

Wow. Fantastic clean work. Just look at his precision in fitments.

Lucky you, getting the opportunity to shoot these. Were they all from the maker? Ready for clients or a show?

I can add to this thread later with other of Charlie's knife photos, but I sure can't surpass your displays. Really clean work.

Jos summed it up perfectly. I especially like those Bowies:thumbup:

If you want to see a bit more of his work, Ars Cultri has an other one of his Bowies (for sale)...a very eleborate one.

Charlie Weiss is a good example of a fine maker whose work is not know by the masses, however is extremely talented in many areas.
Thanks for posting the photos Buddy as we don't see enough of his pieces.

I've admired his work for a long time, really appreciate these pictures.

I have always admired his clean work, and attention to detail. I don't however get the re-surfacing, or not know by the masses. His work is very well known the world over. If he ever went away, I don't know about it. It could be more of the narrow focus here that makes it seem that he is relatively unknown. Nothing could be further from the truth. He has been, and remains one of the Super Stars of uber quality, fit and finish!

(Never found a knife I couldn't sharpen. Might not want blame the maker on this one!) Now if it wouldn't keep a decent edge after sharpening, that could be a different story!

I fell in love with a little ivory handled knife of his a few years back that was scrimshawed by Linda Karst. At the time it was out of my range, but I saw it resurface on a dealer site a year or so ago. I wish I had a least saved a pic:D

Mike, I'm not surprised Charlie is well know to you and those who have been in the industry for YEARS, however though his work is magnificent, there's not much of it out there. Or at least where it can be viewed/enjoyed.
I bet if you asked 100 folks at random at knife shows if they knew who Charlie Weiss was, I doubt if you would consistenly find 15 that could truthfully say they did. In other words, he's not known as an icon of knifemaking though his work may indicate he should be.
