Chicago Show

Very nice work as usual, Murray:thumbup: Woulld I be correct in my impression that this show tends to lean heavily toward the folder side of the bidness?:D

anyone else notice that knife shows are fashion disasters?

:D with the exception of CKCA attire of course. ;) :D
Guess folks dress for comfort.

Great job Murray. You really keep those who can't attend abreast of what going on at the shows.
What's that your forth review this summer? Great stuff.

For someone who doesn't get to go to knife shows and put faces to those very well known names, that was most enjoyable.

Thank you!

Super review, Murray and Phyllis! Documenting these shows is Very good for the Custom knife world.

A.T., my take on this show; First and foremost (No ivory for sale)

I've been doing it for 5 years and have watched it change into a show with more of a Tactical and upscale folder flair/theme. Not many forged guys there on either side of the tables. I did OK with sales but not great and there were a lot of knives that went home with many makers (a few makers did very well). Seems like more dealers each year and less makers, (30+) now that's a lot of dealers for a small show:eek: Attendance seemed to be down this year also. This show will lose more makers next year, with the move to down town Chicago and I don't feel it's a good move but I could be wrong.

With that said, I had a wonderful time, most fun of any previous Chicago show! Thanks Rob! :D

Superb show review Murray!

DHIII's knives were awesome, as were those professional-looking place cards that accompanied each knife - complete with photo and everything!

That John Young walrus chute is just dreamy. I got to spend some time chatting with John at last year's show - really nice guy.

Kyle Royer's table looks to have been extremely impressive - I hope he'll be making it to more shows in the neart future.

Thanks again for the detailed look!

Roger

this was a unique year and not one that will normally occur

Chuck re the prices and sales.

Well, many have seen the auction and the show was good to some but some dealers did not do well nor did some makers. Traffic was good on Friday but Saturday seemed down but that was not surprising if the locals stayed away because of the heavy rains which saw O'Hare receive 6 1/2" and there was a lot of flooding and road outages.

I was busy delivering CKCA flyers and taking photos plus trying to enjoy the show and see knives and speak with makers and others.

Regarding the Auction - a lot of Emersons just did not sell at reserve and were either reduced or not proceeded with. A few other knives did not meet their reserve. Many sold and because everyone may have a different opinion as to value (which seems to something the dealers have a handle on but perhaps not so much the average collector) a lot of $ did exchange hands and keep in mind there was an auction premium plus local taxes. The only one I should have bid on was the Warenski Bowie as although it may not be the major style of knife sought out by major players, to me it was a nice Warenski and would have fit into my collection nicely had it not gone too high but at the price it did go, someone got a nice knife at good value.

Now if someone wants a complete rundown on the sale price, I could get those quite easily as we did keep track and I think only missed one or two.

A.T. are you doing O.K.? I am hoping that health wasn't the reason for you not being able to attend. Missed seeing you there. Murray did a great job covering the show but as you know the picture of myself and John Bardsley was incorrect. John was assisting me with my table becasue I had to leave Friday night to return home for my stepdaughter's wedding on Saturday. No big deal and I can see why he made the mistake. I am working with John in my shop to assist him in learning to make knives. It was nice winning the "Best Folder" award at the show and met a lot of new people. I have started doing some sculpting on my folders and this was my first so it was very exciting to win the award with it. Sales were not what I would have liked but the show is always fun and meeting new people and seeing old friends always makes it worthwhile
