Rusty asked me a question in another thread. I can't find it, so I am posting a new one.
The question was:
"I have heard that China is continuing to round up the native Tibetans, shuffle them off to other fringe areas like Mongolia and move in the Han."
I asked my friend in Kathmandu because he is very knowlegdeable about Tibet. He responded
"Bill,
"Briefly, the population of Tibet is something like 6 million Tibetans and an estimated 7.5 million Chinese, most of whom are in Kham and Amdo.
"There are very active incentive programs in place by the Chinese government to get Han settlers into Tibet. They have made people offers that are hard to beat - housing, jobs, and various financial incentives to move to Tibet.
"As for moving Tibetans out, they don't bother much with that really. It is well documented that there is forced sterilization of Tibetan women (It is estimated that between 4 and 20 percent of Tibetan women are no longer able to reproduce due to forced or coerced sterilization), teaching Chinese language and writing in schools rather than Tibetan language, inability to practice their religion, mass imprisonment of dissenters, etc. etc. They are crushing the Tibetans within Tibet. They don't need to bother much with sending them out. Tibetans are already a minority in their own country.
"This is only the tip of the proverbial ice berg. Besides the human aspects, there are major issues with regard to the pillaging of Tibet's natural resources. Deforestation, mining, oil & gas drilling(http://www.savetibet.org/Environment/Environment.cfm?ID=104&c=30), Chinese poaching/ avid hunting - and not for food, maybe for the pelt or some body part for traditional medicines but just as often simply for the thrill of killing an animal, to shoot something, maybe take a photo with the carcass, then get back in the jeep and leave it there where it fell.
"By the way there are also plenty of ICBM nuclear launching platforms in Tibet. http://www.tibet.com/Eco/Green98/chap6.html
"Basically for the Chinese Tibet is a place to pillage resources, expand population, and launch missiles. The Tibetan people are just an obstacle to be overcome as they use Tibet as a "facility".
"Ok, gotta go, we can discuss this more later.
"Steve
I am shocked by the things this short letter brings to light!
"Forced sterilzation?"
"ICBM Nuclear launching platforms?" And radioactive waste dumping
"Pillage Tibet natural resources?"
Maybe when we get through with Nepal, we should push on into Tibet.
