Which is better for camping/hiking and hard use? Does the Military have dual liners like the Chinook? Is the new Millie better than the old one? Besides the different blade steel, what are the differences between the old and new Military? Any other opinions and comments about these two knives are appreciated:)

Thanks!

Jeff

Personally, I'd choose the Military for hiking and camping. It doesn't have dual liners like the Chinook, so it's much lighter, but it does have a more usefull blade shape and grind. For real hard use chores, there's no reason not the bring a fixed blade if you're out in the wilderness.

There have been a couple of different generations of the Military, so I'm not quite sure which ones you're refering to. It seems like there have been different opinions on which configuration is the best. I personally like the 2nd generation ones that are diamond engraved, but some people seem to prefer the latest batch of Militaries that came out around a year ago. There were some complaints about the very first Militaries that hit the streets though. That first generation was made around '97, I think.

Given that a camper rarely carries all the tools they will ever need, I think that the Chinook offers a more robust platform for the prying and hammering that a knife might get called upon for when the proper tool is a million miles away.

There's also the lockback vs. liner lock issue, and in the dirt, I'd prefer a lockback's security and maintainability, especially the steroid enhanced MBC lockback.

I agree about the fixed blade, but mine's affixed to my pack strap (gotta love a Tek Lok!), not my belt. And the camp knife is stowed. It's the little "gotcha" type chores that a folder winds up catching, when you didn't think you'd need a knife at all.

Hello,

a quick word to tell you that both Chinook and Military models are used by French Special Forces.
The Military (serrated) is also used as a diving knife for more than a year without any problem...

You can't go wrong with both of these knives.

cheers,

JM
