hey guys, I'm about to buy one one ebay. Two question for you.............

1 What is the difference between the orginal and the Chinook II.

2. They say the Manix if tough, how does the Chinook compare in toughness?

Hi Cliff, quick answer to #1 is that the Chinook II has a distinctly differently shaped blade spine and weighs several ounces less than the "original recipe" due that change combined with skeletonized liners and a minor reshaping of the handle.

More detailed answer, with pictures, can be found here...

As for #2, would say the Manix may have a very slight advantage for tip strength due to the flat grind and less acute point. Beyond that, the materials and construction of the two knives is very much alike - 4mm thick S30V blades, dual steel liners, G-10 scales, front locks, similar pivots. They are the two toughest folding knives Spyderco makes.

Great and thorough answer. Thanks my fellow forumite. I'm making a buy on ebay in a few moments.

By the way, I have a Chinook first generation and I love it, BUT damn... it's so heavy in the pocket! So I was thinking about drilling a few holes in the liners to reduce the weight :D

Do you think I can drill through the 410 SS liners easily or are those hardened and I will need a tungsten drilling bit per hole to do that
