CIA Circus in Tibet on PBS-- Details here

At a time when our past mistakes with Afganistan are clear to the world- that of abandoning them before stability, (after overthrowing the Russians) this timely hit piece on America arrives. By the fair and balanced PBS, of course. Why is this unfair, if we've committed yet one more sin and abandoned Nepal?

Because we are labeled imperialist by critics, nation builders: we are damned if we do and damned if we do not.

What is our lesson? Help Nepal. Take the criticism. The number one nation in the world has always been criticized and always will be held to impossible standards. Let us at least help others and ourselves, as we have done, and stop basing foriegn policy on the fear of the repercussions of 'world perception' we will recieve no matter what.

(I can only wonder if we dropped Nepal to appease commercial interests who did not wish to antagonize China. )

Maybe I read the artcle wrong, but it seemed that the situation with the CIA is past tense. I am hoping that this artlcle along with the present Maoist crap could stir the US to make amends by providing more aid.

I do think that it is up to us as enlightened citizenry to continue to be vocal in our support of Nepal -- to use the info in this article to post a wave of protest to our representatives by email, paper and phone.

To remind them in no uncertain terms that we voted them into office and this sort of behavior is unacceptable. It is also bad press.

I am not so naive as to think that there are no economic interests underlying socio-political problems, there are. However I continue to believe that we CAN make a difference. We certainly CAN make a NOISE!

I do not like violence, but I believe that this is all the Maoist terrorists will understand.

I had a good friend here in Atlanta, Mitch Werbel. He and his people were assigned to protect an American Coca Cola executive on a trip to South America. Coca Cola had been warned that a kidnap/ransom plot might be in effect for the executive.

Mitch put out the word, "We will protect our man. If, in the unlikely event you do manage to kidnap him, we will not pay, we will not negotiate. However we will find you and we will kill you. We will kill your families, your relatives, your dogs, your chickens, we will burn your villages and grind them into the ground. It will be as though you never existed."

The tour of South America went without an incident.

I liked Mitch. He died of kidney cancer a few years ago. I wish he was around now.

I have had enough.

Yes, the article refers to past actions, or lack thereof.

I like your quotes.

You can't please all of the people all of the time. Sometimes you have to make your best call and do what you think is right, remembering that you are an American.

That's right. Many nations hate us regardless of what we do. We can't change that. The important thing is to make our Nation's direction one where we do not hate ourselves. When we can live with what we do, they can too.

Europe didn't complain when we had flight missions over Bosnia, enforcing an intervention which included an arms embargo which left one side more poorly defended. That was a 'good thing'....er uh..but wasn't that nation building?

We are expected and even required by the world to intervene in other nation's business, then critized when it does not turn out well. That is acceptable, but forgetting the Good we do is not.
