It seems all my micarta or canvas micarta (not sure the difference) knives over time, even a short period of time they seem to darken and blacken and build up some oily (maybe hand oil) residue. Anyone have recommendations on how to fix it or clean it?

I've got an old tomb brown tracker by tops that had the same thing, handle was green when I got it, noe it's dark darkgreen close to black.

Greatly appreciated!

(and if anyone could drop an explanation or a link to info on the difference in handles/scales thatd be great too)

DON'T PUT THEM IN THE DISHWASHER! And DON'T remove the handles to clean them!!! Use hot water from your sink faucet, dish detergent and a brush. Nothing more. Simple and it works.

Best way to clean your scales is to take them off. I recommend a nice little clearing in the middle of the woods with lots of brush, high grass, and leaves on the ground. When you're putting them back on make sure they are REALLY tight that way they're sure not to drop off in the middle of use!

In all seriousness though, what Jeff said should have you covered. Remember, don't be stupid, and you can go far in this world.

God bless,
Adam

seems like if you dont remove the scales, then water will be under them and rust.

If you do remove the scales then the water will indeed get under them because they will absorb water throughout

OK, I just tried the dishwashing liquid, toothbrush and hot water treatment on my Tops Tracker. It now looks like new!

Yep, every once in a while we know what we're talking about 'round here.

So... no need to ever take them off?

I mean,So after washing/brushing it, and thenyou dry off the handles...
THEN do you take them off? ...To get any water away from the metal?
Or, is the seal just that water tight, that no water ever gets under it?
