Just bought a Gillette adjustable razor off e-bay and was wondering how to kill the baddies on it when it arrives. Should a boiling then a dip in alcohol or bleach do the job? Can't wait to get it just don't want to catch hep in the process:eek:

Baptism by fire! Just joking, I'm no expert, but I would use it after that treatment. Germs may not even live long enough to transfer from the last user to you.

I use something called Cool Care Plus on my straight razors - it is a virucide, fungicide, bactericide and tuberculocide. It can be purchased at most beauty supply stores and I have found it here: http://www.folica.com/Andis_Cool_Care_d377.html

The reason I use it on my straight razors is not just for the germ killing, but for the rust preventative in it.

There are a number of ways to sanitize a suface. Somewhat fewer that will sterilize it. The difference is the number of organism that can remain viable after treatment.
For most application of metal or some plastics, sanitization can be accomplished by boiling for 15 minutes, soaking in 70% isopropyl alcohol (standard rubbing alcohol) for at least a minute or wiping with a 10% (if I remember right) household bleach solution. There are many other products that will sanitize a surface.
Sterialization is harder to accomplish. A bleach solution can sterilize. Also boiling at 245 degrees F (I think) for 15 minutes under 15 lbs pressure and some comercial solutions.

Some of these treatments will rust some steels and may degrade some plastics.
