I'm having a blast picking up these old, beater knives on the cheap and then sitting on the porch, cleanin' 'em up. This one turned out to be something really nice.

Question is...what am I going to do with these now that I've breathed new life into 'em?

Nothing says shiny like a blade stamp reflection. I'm surprised at how well this one turned out!

Hi Casey -

Do you mind telling us how you get such nice results?

I have a couple that I would like to clean up rather than send them into Buck.

I can use polish / brasso, but I just wondered how you are getting such excellent results.

best regards-

Casey, that one came out nice:thumbup:
I've been doing the same thing, on the porch, cup of coffee, sanding away.
I've gotten more joy out of gifting some of my re-stores to family and friends.
BTW... Cool shot of the stamp reflection!

That looks great. You would never know it was the same knife. For a lot of people, they would have put a knife that looked like that in a drawer and forgot about it. Now it has a new lease on life, and many years of use left in it

Don't know what Casey uses, but micromesh (and water) is superb for that kind of polishing/restoration work.

I use various grits of sandpaper. I worked this one over with 180 grit until all the scratches and gouges were gone. There were some big ones! I then stepped up to 220, 300 and maybe 600...can't recall. I tried to alternate direction with each change in grit. I finished it off on a buffing wheel. There are spots I wish I had worked over better, but all-in-all, it's now a gorgeous 112. The scales concern me the most as I like to get the rivets cleaned up. But, if I'm doing the long direction with sandpaper, I hit the scales while I'm at it and try to avoid going across them.

Now, off to find the next project!

Wow... Watching you guys clean up these oldies half makes me wish I'd done the same to my old 112, instead of sending it in. But, I know that once it comes back with its special re-blade, I'll be happy...
Gonna have to pick up a couple old beaters to refurbish myself.
Nice work!
