I'm going to be purchasing my first RAT knife (RC-3) and I can't for the life of me decide between the plain edge and the serrated. Part of me really wants the plain edge for the ease of sharpening......but I climb as well so having the serrated for a quick cut really appeals to me.

How hard are the serrations to sharpen? Some knifes out there are a pain in the backside to sharpen with their serrations.

Also, should I get the jump sheath or would the regular sheath be secure enough given my climbing activities?

Thanks folks!

the Rat serations can be sharpened just as the rest of the blade, nothing hard on sharpening rat serrations :p, that said, you don't really need serrations (own opinion) if your can sharpen your knife properly it will cut as well as serrations :D

What about on Cords/Rope? I can sharpen my knife scalpel sharp, but nothing cuts through thick rope quickly like spyderco serrations.

i dont like serrations really. that being said, if i am consistently doing somthing were cutting a rope might become critical (in a life or death/serious injury kind of way) i go with serrated.

i use a spyderco salt for the work boat. and though i usually stick to bouldering, if I ever got into doing multi-pitch climbing i would get a serrated rc-3. i try not to use the serrated edge if at all possible just to save it for when it is really needed.

Which sheath would you recommend? Is the kydex strong enough to hold the knife inverted? or should I go with the molle sheath?

It just depends on what's your own preference, if you need serrations than get them, it's just in my use of my blades i've never felt the need of serrations

RAT Serrations are easy to resharpen on a stone or with a rod.... for cutting rope and what not the Serrations with work great for you. The factory sheath is awesome but I would like to suggest the molle back option for ease of carry options plus has a pommel cover for inverted carry.

For a climber serrations will do best. Nothing cuts rope better than serrated knife. Get the molle sheath for added security.

Plain edge here. If you find yourself cutting rope a lot then pick up a smaller SE knife like the Spyderco Harpy or Tasman Salt.

for rope and webbing go with the serrations. The molle sheath will add a lot of security.
Just my 2 cents.

I like the molle sheath. Gives you many options as to how you want to carry with total security of the knife.
